So turns out, around 200 of them got STOLEN from the factory and are out in the wild. They all seem to be base models from what I have seen, and the M4 MBP BASE MODEL looks like my dream MacBook (Coming from the M1 MacBook Air with 8 GB of Ram). Everything else we know is:
  • 2 external displays are supported, no need to close the lid
  • 3 Thunderbolt 4 ports
  • Space Black replacing Space Gray
  • 16 GB of Ram as base
  • No Apple Stickers (Expected unfortunately)
They came with macOS 15.0 build 24A8332 (Which you cannot get on a currently released MacBook), and it doesn't look like the latest betas of macOS Sequoia or macOS 15.0.1 is supported on these MacBooks.

I unfortunately do not have one, and I don't want to have one until release because it seems kind of illegal to own one.
Let me know if you know anyone else with them, I have many questions. I will keep the person anonymous as well.
It's crazy that around 200 of them are out there, especially with some intriguing specs. The fact that they support two external displays without needing to close the lid is a fantastic feature for multitaskers

That could be dangerous. A MBA with 3 thunderbolt 4 ports. I’m a skeptic at them starting off with 16GB of RAM this year, but that would be bold.

I have very little knowledge of this, but are margins higher on profit with MBPs or MBAs?
It would be great. I hate having both ports on the left because when I place the laptop to the right of the monitor, there is a gap between the internal and external screens for the cables. With one port on each side, I could place the laptop close to the monitor regardless of which side of the monitor I placed the laptop on.

The QR code on the box goes to: https://support.apple.com/en-us/boxinfo/120093 - which isn't a page that exists yet.

But it is the same basic format as that on an iPhone 16 series: https://support.apple.com/en-us/boxinfo/120097 - iPhone 16 Pro Max for that one.

Note that anyone can create a QR code to point to any URL, though. I just made one for /120091, only to discover that's the iPhone 16 Plus, so I made one for /120092, which doesn't exist (yet?) So the fact that the QR code seems like a possible valid QR code isn't proof anything - if this is a fake, it's already such high quality that faking the QR code doesn't seem like a stretch. But it is another sign of possible legitimacy.

Think of everything that would need to be faked for this story to happen:

  • Fake news of 200 MBP for sale online
  • Fake collusion between two YouTubers agreeing to split the the views of unboxing a fake product
  • Fake label and box
  • Fake box contents, including properly die cut Quick Start Guide with 2024 copyright date
  • Fake never before seen green wrapping on the 70W USB-C power adapter
  • Fake “About this Mac” video showing M4
  • Fake GeekBench scores and submission

Possible? Sure. Likely? No.

Maybe only the machines were stolen? The theft could have happened in China, hardware taken out of an assembly or testing facility without packaging or accessories. The Russia connection makes sense in the Chinese context as well.

If so then Mac16,1 is the correct identifier. See my posts on the identifiers in general, there are two, here is one (with a link to the other), if you’re curious to know why I was so confident about that.

Why would anybody bother repackaging it? And where would somebody get never before seen packaging for the 70W adapter and freshly die cut Quick Start Guides with a 2024 copyright date? These are not something you can print at Staples.

If you've been anywhere near a Foxconn or Luxshare facility, you'll know nobody is stealing a single iPhone component from the facility, much less an entire computer. Workers are not allowed to bring anything inside. Nothing comes out. The sites are in the middle of nowhere.

Russians were probably the only buyers willing to take the risk of buying the stolen merchandise. Everybody else in the world who can afford to buy an expensive pre-release product knows the outcome. We've seen Weibo accounts shut down after Apple intervened. We all know what happened with Gizmodo in 2010.

In all likelihood, these were stolen in transit to the U.S. We've all heard of UPS workers cutting into packages and delivering empty boxes on launch day.

Am I finally going to get to stop whining about 8GB not being enough RAM?? If so, I’ll be ecstatic

Better not. I’m gonna turn the AI crap off and it better be an option or I’m moving to Linux

Apple Intelligence is opt-in.

I'm unsure which processes are involved, but looking at all processes owned by _modelmanagerd, it comes down to about 300 MiB RAM usage here, with notifications and mail threads being summarized, which is one of the few LLM features I care about.

It's opt-in now during beta. It will be default when .1 releases are available.

Siri is opt-in. Apple Intelligence will likely be opt-in for the same reasons: it takes up extra resources and complicated the privacy policy.

And worst upgrade ever for the M4 Pro MacBook Pro... Only more performance bro

Still as fake as the day is long. Either both videos are real, or both are not. A skilled special-effects artist could do those chassis alterations in fifteen minutes. That is the M3 Pro/Max MacBook Pro 14" chassis.

Plus, to be real, the following would have to be true:

[1] Apple ships M4 preview hardware in edited M3 packaging, to prevent the M4 box art from being exposed in exactly this way if it is stolen or lost. Doesn't seem likely.
[2] Mac16,1 is the M4 MacBook Pro. That is unlikely. Most likely it is Mac16,3. There is no world in which Mac16,1 is the M4 MacBook Pro.
[3] These Russian geeks would have to be wealthy halfwits who got very lucky. Also doesn't seem very likely. More likely they are just screwing around. And I must say, mission accomplished! You have to applaud it. I didn't think my opinion of Gurman could go any lower, but there you have it. But at least Apple's Blue Team is having a good laugh.

I'll be happy to come back and admit to being wrong. Will you?

Looks like your wallpaper theory fell through. Don’t forget your commitment. 😂
