Allowing HDMI Audio on Second Display?

Just got my new ASUS display and I'm having trouble getting sound out of the speakers that are built in.

I am using a current gen Macbook Pro 15" running OSX 10.8.

Also using the Monoprice Thunderbolt to HDMI Adapter (w/ Audio Support)

I can see that the monitor is connected via HDMI in System Preferences -> Sound but there is no audio when I select it.

I also tried a trick with the Audio MIDI Setup application that I found online. As you can see, it's still detected, but the adjustment bars are greyed out (disabled).

Am I missing something obvious or should this be working out of the box? 😕

Try to change format to 44100Hz and 2ch-16-bit for starters.

I tried this in the Midi app, is there another "advanced sound settings" app somewhere?

Have you tried selecting the ASUS monitor?
