I know my mom has taken notice of the VW commercials, she's started talking to my dad about getting a Jetta. Although I've been pushing her to get a Prius instead, but I'll admit that the Unpimp My Ride commercials have made me want a GTI.

I'll restate what has been said in this thread, the commercial(s) stick with you, whether it be the VW ones or the Allstate one. And I'll be honest, I much rather have the Allstate commercials than all the other insurance companies that just talk about how much you save. I want an insurance company that will help in an accident, not just be cheaper before I have one.

I don't believe in censorship, but perhapse they could have the same educational affect with crash dummies?

Plus, I don't know if I'd call it greater realism, showing people in a car accident neatly getting caught by the air bags. What about the more likely odd angle impacts that toss you sideways, with your head ricocheting off the door?

I hated the commercial. Absolutely no chance of me owning a VW-made car at this point. If anything, it made me associate VW with getting into a car crash. Loved the "time to unpimp" ads.

Edit: Scaring your customers into buying a product is a sign of desperation.

Not likely. Real is better in this case. The shock of the people talking then getting hit wouldn't be there with dummies.

I still have no intention of buying a VW.

Disturbing

I had an accident about 2 weeks ago where my airbag deployed and caused a hand injury requiring surgery. It was bad enough to have experienced the fright of such an accident, but then to see that VW ad with the two male friends talking & without any warning at all, seeing them hit the airbags was just too awful to describe. I actually screamed involuntarily when I saw it - imagine seeing such a thing while watching Food TV. I complained already to VW & the corp. that owns Food Network TV - no responses of course. Seeing crash dummies is effective - seeing real people is unnecessary & mentally cruel.

Yes, it's unnecessarily cruel for those who have been in an accident, but let me ask you: If these types of commercials are effective at lowering general and drunk driving related accidents, which means that less people in your society would experience the same amount of pain and trauma (or possibly more) that your accident caused you, do you think it's worth it?

I think so, but admittedly, I've never been in a car accident. I don't think my opinion would change, but maybe I shouldn't speak so soon.

Message lost

Quite honestly, I don't think these ads protray any message relating to reduction of accidents or drunk driving - they only are trying to sell VW's. The type of accident I was in was purely from someone not paying attention - there was nothing I could've done to prevent it which is exactly how these VW ads appear to me....shock value being used for corporate gain - no other message that I see.

Get a TDI. Use biodiesel.

That's actually what kind of Jetta my parents were looking at, although I don't think biodiesel is available around here, not widely enough at least. E85 is though, seeing as I'm in the Midwest. Even so, if I were to get a new car, I'd go the Prius route. But my 2001 Cougar is perfectly fine, and I've never seen a car that matches its styling, so it'd be hard to replace.
