A year of the worst iPhone OS that ever happened, plagued (still!) with a battery drain because of the deeply embedded liquid glass that no programmer could save with battery optimisation and redraw issues to this day. I wish I had stayed with iOs 18.

OK so first off, I'm new here, so I feel I should get this on the table:
I am the furthest possible thing from a blind hater (or fanboy for that matter).
Apple is just a company, made up of a lot of people.

Not only have I had only an iPhone as my primary mobile device since the 3G / 3GS; I've also had the iPad since the very first one. (I just unearthed my original one, actually!!)

Not only that; currently, in active use / service in my house, we have 13 iDevices.
THIRTEEN.
All actively in use (in different ways & by different people. YES, I need to trim that down because it is ridiculous. Don't judge me... 🤓)

I have always hated Mac Computers (MacOS really; the hardware is superb). I have an old MacBook that I’ve been forcing myself to use for a few months now to see if I can get myself to stop hating them. I’m giving it a fair shot.
😎

I feel this is important so you know I am a long time user of Apple products, and in fact firmly believe they are the best mobile devices + Mobile OS on the market, period. (Again; their computer hardware is phenomenal; I just hate MacOS….)

That said;

iOS 26, has, without a doubt, been the absolute worst, most awful, terrible, steaming pile of garbage I've ever seen Apple release in almost 20 years.

The very first version of iOS 26 released by Apple last fall; let’s say it’s 26.0.0; was not even Alpha software. It was so awfully unstable, buggy, glitchy. It literally KILLED my 11" M1 iPad pro & I STILL regret updating that iPad, to this day. I did NOT update my 13" M4 ipad, and never will let iOS 26 touch my M4 iPad. Not sure if i'll even update to iOS 27. Apple has destroyed my trust in them to release an OS that isn't a nuclear disaster. Each release of iOS 26 has brought waves of awful battery life, stutter / lag / delay / awful UI / UX experience & performance, and so on.

Specifically; iOS 26 on my 11" M1 iPad Pro (a fine, if no longer cutting edge device; but it ran iOS 18 perfectly fine) KILLED the battery. My 11" M1 iPad went from a typical 10+ hour battery, to 3-4 hours - TOPS. Probably even less.
I was too upset to sit & time it with a stopwatch. I could literally watch the battery tick down fast.

The past week, on multiple occasions, my wife & I have been sitting right next to each other, and both our phones got so hot to the point they overheated & shut down temporarily, which was PERFECT timing right in the middle of my child's play. Thanks, Apple. 🙄😐🤬

Never had that happen before, esp. not when I was literally sitting & just taking some photos & video. And I've definitely never had the same thing happen to both mine & my wife's phones at the same time. Yes of course, I restarted them (I restart all our iDevices multiple times per week just to keep them all running smoothly).

FINALLY just now, the other day, when iOS 26.5 came out, FINALLY it improved the battery, so it lasts more than just 3-4 hours - on my iPhone 16 Pro and iPad 11" M1.

Another super annoying issue that persists across all iOS 26.X updates and on both my iPhone 16 Pro and 11" M1 iPad Pro is rearranging / re-organizing home screen icons feels like the device is stuck in molasses, with some gravel throwin in for good measure. Basically and overall; the #1 top thing I've always appreciated about iOS over Android; how buttery smooth that is; Apple clearly internally changed their definition of "smooth" to include molasses, tar, sand & gravel.

Little things (which aren't quite so little in practice) like the search button / box / bar shows in totally different places across apps. Searching inside the Apple Reminder app is mostly an exercise in futility. I need to either go to another device & search, or force quit & re-launch the app, or just clear out & re-type my search query multiple times.

I do absolutely LOVE how Apple finally created "urgent" reminders (alarms) in the reminders app. That has truly, literally been a game & life-changer. Combine that with Fantastical's support of the same for calendar events and honestly; it's seriously improved my life & work in meaningful ways. Truly.

Other significant bugs in iOS 26 (and DEFINITELY iOS 26); anytime I've been on any sort of a call; phone (cellular); Teams, Google Meet, Zoom; anything; anytime an alert / alarm fires, or is about to fire (about 1-2 seconds before) the call audio goes all crackly & staticky and fully cuts out as the alarm / alert is firing. This is not just me; many MANY others I've been on calls with have said; "excuse me? You cut out; are you still there?"

So its NOT just me / my perception.

I can absolutely keep going, but I'll stop there.
Summary; iOS 26 is hot garbage (or cold garbage; whatever you find more offensive).

I am very glad to hear that iOS 27 is supposed to be a "focus on performance & bug fixes, not so many new features" release.

I've also always been incensed at how Apple seems to CONSTANTLY - with almost EVERY iOS update; not just major releases like going from 18 to 26, but 26.0; 26.0.1; 26.0.2; 26.2; etc. etc; apple seems to CONSTANTLY roll out new emojis, wallpaper & similar banal garbage like that.

IDC how few people work on that; those people's jobs either shouldn't exist, or they should be repurposed to, oh, IDK, making sure that my almost $2k phone can, you know.....MAKE PHONE CALLS......

I don’t know how these experiences are all over the road. Here’s mine.
- IPP M1 used several hours a day for a few years. Has MKB. Upgrading to iPadOS 26 was a non-event.
- IPP M5 iPadOS runs very well. Standby could be better.
- 14PM and 15PM iOS 26 runs approximately equivalently to iOS 18.
- AW, HomePod, ATV no apparent issues.

No issues with zoom on iPads or iPhones. I enjoy the “banal garbage” as you put it.

You cannot understand how different people have different experiences?

Glad you enjoy meaningless wallpaper & emoji, meanwhile millions of users are struggling with basic, fundamental, core functionality thanks to ios 26...... 🤷‍♂️

ETA:
Just right now - not including dozens of past Apple devices I've owned - I have 13 iPads / phones just in my home. Not even biz. My sample size is almost 3x yours. I'm very glad you haven't had issues, but that doesn't mean other people cannot / do not have problems. What's funny is in years past, I've similarly been like, "man that sucks, my devices all run great".....until now with iOS 26..... :-|

Especially on the same hardware as me.

Well it’s my thing. Take it or leave it is an individual thing.

I think hundreds of millions are not having issues. But I hope the millions that are having issues can get it sorted.

iPadOS - I miss iPadOS 18. The new windowing system is neat but I ultimately find myself wishing I had the iPadOS multitasking back. I have unintentionally pulled fullscreen apps into a windowed mode many times. The menu bar is neat but there is no option to make it visible at all times so I constantly forget it is there. Pulling down from the middle of the screen for the menu bar can and will do what I previously mentioned and move a fullscreen app into a windowed mode. This wouldn't be a problem if there was an option to make it so you can only activate the windowed mode by pulling up from the bottom-right corner but that option does not exist. That gesture also interferes with Quick Note. Slide Over has returned to iPadOS 26 but it is a shell of it's former self. You can only use it in the Windowing or Stage Manager modes and it is only useable with one app at a time. I feel like with iPadOS 18 Apple had great multitasking that fit within the confines of the iPad has a platform and with 26 they gave it the Old Yeller treatment.

I wouldn't even know. I had to immediately disable the new app windowing & most other LG features to get my M1 iPad to stay alive longer than ~3-4 hours, as well as get it to NOT run like a 15+ year old device (as slow as if it was stuck in a mix of tar & gravel).

I so totally regret updating my ipad to ios 26. I'm just SO glad I did not update my M4 13" iPad or I'd REALLY be pissed.

I was browsing the iOS 7 section of the site for fun over the weekend, and he was the *exact* same in 2013 as he is now. Same amount of comments going against the grain in every single thread that criticizes the latest OS.

Not sure exactly the reason for it, but there’s nothing we can do to change it.

Quit releasing decimal updates with nothing but new wallpaper. That should tell you all you need to know about Apple and their direction. There are good things about the iPhone. I really do like faceID and Apple Pay. I find where I live more places accept Apple Pay than Google Pay and I did have a time here and there Google Pay wouldn’t launch. So I do appreciate Apple Pay being reliable. Notes and Reminders are nice as well, better than the core apps on Android, but of course there are tons of notes and reminder apps out there. Can’t leave out the hardware. Apple does know how to build a phone, I’ll give them that for sure.

Watch, meh. I bought the series 10 when I bought my 16 pro and it was ok I guess. I never noticed much of a difference with 26 on there. After 8 months or so I wasn’t sold on the watch so I sold it. I don’t need to be that “connected” to my phone and the endless notifications. It never really served a purpose for me and I prefer to have an analog watch on my wrist.

I have a company issued iPad for work and due to security protocols they made us update those to 26. I can’t say I use it much because it’s not a productive device. Cool if you want to watch a movie or play a game, that’s kinda all it’s good for. But for getting things done it’s a complete waste of a device. As someone else said, the multi tasking is terrible. 18 was a much better use of that. Every 3rd or 4th attempt I return to the Home Screen my icons disappear. I usually could wait a few seconds and they would come back, now I have to turn off the screen and turn it back on. That is a big complaint to our IT department and they don’t have an answer for us. It’s pretty bad when the director of ops is calling our iPads generic junk, lol.

This all being said, I came from 16 years of Android so this is what I compare it to. Honestly iOS doesn’t hold a candle to the pixel 7 pro I came from or the 26 ultra my wife is on. Many people say the OS’s are more similar now than they’ve ever been. I find this very very far from the truth. If all you use your phone for is to numb your brain on TikTok or instagram, then yes, they would be similar because you could do that on any device. If you use your phone to make your living on the go you would know these operating systems are not on that similar. I’m glad I gave the iPhone a shot, but this will be the last Apple device I buy for a good long while.

re: "decimal updates with nothing but wallpaper"
Um.....excuse me.....
Don't forget all the new emoji apple constantly releases too...... 😐 😑 😒 😐 🙄🙄

As for watch;
I splurged & upgraded to an Apple Watch Ultra 3. I absolutely LOVE it! The battery is so amazingly long, but the larger face is such that I truly use it more than ever before (S6 previously)

I have kept my AWU3 on the exact same release of OS as it came from the factory; 26.1. I've had such an awful experience across SO many different devices with 26, there's no way I'm going to let Apple screw up my beautiful new Ultra 3!!!
Put another way; I'm 100% THRILLED with my AWU3 in every way as it came out of the box; why should I risk fixing what's certainly not broken?!?

re: iPad; I very strongly disagree with you. 🙂 For stuff like email, internet / web browsing, note taking, reading & reviewing anything; long docs, long webpages, books, etc; for all that & more; the iPad is just amazing. I've had one since the very first one in 2010. I told myself; "I'll go to the store. If I can touch type on it, I'll buy it."

I walked out the door with one....🤓

I certainly agree that apple limits the iPad in horribly obvious & frustrating ways, but for the few things apple does allow it to do, it is superb.
😎

Finally; re: Android vs. iOS: can you give some more examples / info of what you are referring to? I know android is much more open & customizable than iOS, but curious of a few specifics you have in mind.

Thanks!

i’m sorry, but the “they shouldn’t add wallpapers and emojis” argument is so tired, and pointing out its flaws while making the same argument does not negate that point.
The emojis and wallpapers are made by graphic designers, these people are not put in charge of bug squashing.
It’s a bit like complaining that you don’t like the apple silicon team because the iPhone Air’s shade of blue isn’t to your liking, the two things are not even related.
In fact during this last beta cycle for 26.5, the new wallpaper literally wasn’t added to the system until the release candidate. Meaning that during the entire beta testing process, they were squashing bugs… Before they put in the wallpaper. During the beta test, literally the part of the software development where the bugs would be squashed, the wallpaper wasn’t even a factor.

Ok. For you it works better.
For me it don’t.
I used to enable split view a lot before on iOS 18 on my iPad, but now in iOS 26 I stopped using it.
For enabling split view in iOS 26 takes more steps and more time, so it’s not more intuitive.
1 Million Percent Agree!!! Have the same issue on my iPad a16 with iPadOS 26

Overall, I quite like iOS 26. I've been using it since the dev betas, and it's been pretty smooth sailing for me. I love that Liquid Glass has brought some life back to what was a pretty numb and dead feeling OS. I know it's a popular target of hared here, but I love the highlights on the icons, and how they move with your phone.

Now I hope that they take it further by ditching white-on-white, and adding more depth and colour.

I'm so tired of the whole "Apple just releases emoji" nonsense. Let me ask you. When the Unicode Consortium releases a new batch of emoji, what is Apple supposed to do? Use empty square placeholders?

I haven’t run into any major issues — then again, I usually don’t. It’s not the best‑looking device, but the whole glass‑aesthetic thing doesn’t matter to me. I’m not staring at my home screen all day. There are plenty of adjustments you can make, and they should satisfy most people.

The only real problem is the Reddit app. It freezes every so often, makes the phone warm, and that heat seems to spill over and affect other apps.

I actually like Liquid Glass and the features introduced (and especially the reintroduced features that were previously taken away), but I’ve had a few bugs that have been introduced that will just not go away. For example:

  • Apple TV + HomePods - Any playback speed higher than 1 results in distorted and glitching audio that gets worse the longer you listen. Particularly annoying with YouTube since I often watch at 1.25x. Was introduced with 26.1.
  • iPadOS + Magic Keyboard - Literally half the time I try to use Spotlight, it won’t let me type in it, and I have to close it and reactivate it to be able to use it. Imagine this happening multiple times per day over and over.
  • Since 26.4 or 26.5, Safari has been randomly crashing more often than I’ve ever experienced on my iPad.
I have made bug reports for both of these, and many others have experienced them according to online forums.

Just a few I used all the time that were useful:
-File management. My phone could essentially act as a flash drive. Handling documents was a breeze on the go and transferring them to my desktop was a breeze. Just plug it in.

-Split window. Enough said, most will say it’s pointless on a phone, I can assure you it’s not.

-Widgets were scrollable and interactive which made them more efficient to use.

-Keyboards on Android are in a different league with regard to predictive text and autocorrect.

Some awesome Samsung features:

Floating calculator. Could have a small floating window on top of any app which was really handy.

Side panel. This was opened with just a quick swipe from the right side. This could house apps, specific contacts to call or text, tasks, etc.

Customize gestures. custom swipe motions to do different things. Pull down notifications with a quick swipe anywhere on the either side you set, open recent apps with a swipe up on any side you set, a diagonal swipe to launch split screen, etc.

I was not a fan of the duplicate apps on Samsung (calendar, email, etc) even though the core Samsung apps were better than the Google ones.

I’m not saying Apple is terrible. It’s still a great device with great hardware. But the software and some limitations are downright silly. I understand wanting a device that gets out of the way, but it’s almost overdone. I really want to call the iPhone my last mobile device and just upgrade after for 4 or 5 years to another iPhone. After iOS26 I’m not sure that’s gonna happen. I do like my MacBook though. It’s from 2014 and cannot be updated anymore but it still runs fine which is impressive to say the least.

This is also not to say Android doesn’t have its share of bugs. But I feel Android in general over the last 3 years or so has been more stable than iOS. I had less app crashes and better performance on Android in general than I’ve experienced on the iPhone including ios18.

I kicked iOS 26 to the curb. I switched back to Android because with iOS 26, my roaming sim would get turned off each I crossed a border. This never happened in iOS 18.

I switched to iPhone because of the dual SIM/eSIM functionality. It was ahead of Android in 2021. However, now it is the same maybe better on some Android devices. My current device can hold two physical SIM cards and multiple eSIMs and can use any variation of two SIMs. It also doesn't turn off my roaming SIM when I cross a border!

This is me as well. iOS 26 has been rock solid across two iPhones and 2 iPads. While it seems popular to rag on iOS 26 with the release of 26.5 it’s quite good.

Of course we have to add YMMV.

I haven't had any showstoppers with any OS 26 device. Most of the reason is because they still function how I need them too. iOS has slop and questionable choices, but newsflash, everything has since iOS 7 at least when compared to Jobs/Forstall era OS'

I'm normally a beta guy, but I resisted upgrading to iOS 26 betas because of all the backlash, specifically on here. Once I used it, everything I needed my stuff to do was working. Did I like LG originally? I liked the look, wasn't sold on the function. Did I care that Apple kept tweaking it and added the Tinted option? No. Glad it's there for people who do, though.

My barometer for if something is "bad" is if my parents complain, they're in their mid 60's and early 70's and I haven't heard a peep.

YMMV.

honestly I haven't noticed any significant problems (actually no problem I can attribute to ios26) on my phone, on the iPad I've noticed nothing significant ( I suspect the problems I see are with applications) on my desktop I continue on os15.7.7 for reasons best described as 'if it ain't broken don't fix it'

Still on iOS 18 and Sequoia and I am happy. Everything works great.
DO NOT. Under ANY Circumstance. Update to iOS 26.
Just wait for 27.
Smart man.

I’ve also got my 13” M4 on 18 & prob wont even update to 27. 26 has been a sh*&^-show.

Funny; I’ve had quite a few people in their 60s / 70s complain about the iOS 26 update…. 😂
I am very glad you haven’t had any issues!! You are very lucky!!

I NEVER usually have any tech issues either…. least of all with iOS… honestly; of course there are *changes* when you update / upgrade; by definition; but I’ve never had such serious, concrete and chronic problems as I have with iOS 26…. And again; I’ve been using apple products heavily since 2008-ish…..
