Last week I ordered the 13" MacBook Pro (i5/16/512) on sale and AppleCare+ from Best Buy due to the positive reviews. My MacBook Pro is suppose to be delivered to my home in a few days. Lately I've been reading on issues on the 2020 MBP line. The issues are:
1. Loud fan noise
2. Gets hot too use
3. Short battery life
4. Rapid battery drain in sleep mode
5. Screen alignment issue that's off by a few pixels
6. USB 2.0 compatibility issues

Do you think that these issues can be remedied by software patches or that these issues are hardware related? I really don't want a premium laptop that's going to be unusable for a couple of months.

These issues that I mentioned are considered almost a buyers remorse for me and got me thinking to refuse delivery for the Macbook Pro and getting a refund for the Applecare +. I'm not sure if these issues are overexaggerated by MBP owners or anti-Apple people. This got me thinking to get a MS Surface Pro 7 or MS Surface Laptop 3.

I'm so confused! What's your advice in this situation?

I have a 2020 MBP and haven’t noticed/had any of those issues... I know some others are. Fortunately they all sound software related so hopefully Apple will address them shortly.

I did briefly have 1-3 but was expected in the first couple days after initial setup with indexing/photo library initialization from iCloud. I call it “new Mac break-in” 😀

What do you have now? Why did you spec the machine the way you did? Is it a 2TBP or 4TBP model?

My general philosophy has changed to "buy the minimum you need now upgrade when as and when needed", instead of trying to future proof and hold on to the machine for a long time. That way, my expectations are lower and I'm less likely to be disappointed.

I suspect none of these issues will be fixed until Apple has released a few iterations of ARM MBPs. In other words, don't buy one for ~5 years.

NOTE: I have not updated my OS. It is still on the same 10.15.4 from when it first arrived. Don't think it makes a difference, but with Catalina being finnicky, I figured I should stick with the OS version that was on the machine when it passed out of testing prior to shipping.

1. No loud fan noise - the loudest my fans have been were when I was installing Parallels and Windows 10 after. I sometimes get a brief whirl of fan when my 4K monitor has been sleeping and I plug in the USB-C cable. It dies down quickly and I never hear it again.

2. Mine has never been hot to use. I purchased and returned 3 MBPs in 2018 that were literal hot plates that I could not touch. I know the difference.

3. If I'm simply browsing the web, doing some Office work, and listening to music, and have some other apps open in the background, and no external monitor, I consistently get 9-10+ hours of battery life. I get 5 hours if I am driving my external monitor with the lid open for a second screen, which means I am also working in more apps. I hardly use the second scenario now that I have a 4K monitor with USB-C. Another point to note is that it took over a week, but not quite 14 days for me to notice this stability. I've been working on my work laptop a lot lately, so nothing heavy on the MBP at this time. Looking at Activity Monitor at the moment and I've been on battery 1:36 and I'm at 95% Remaining charge, 9:55 Time remaining (of course, as long as I don't suddenly open Parallels and run some programs).

4. I have noticed this twice when I was letting it sleep overnight, but not rapid - maybe 8% down at the most when I come back in the morning. I meant to look into this, but I'm now in the habit of shutting my laptop down when I'm done for the day (I've left my battery charging overnight more than once, so I go through a ritual to develop a habit to make sure I don't forget).

5. No problem with this. I would have noticed something like that right away, but then I admired Catalina island for all of a day before putting up my own wallpapers.

6. This seems to be the biggest issue out of what you have listed and from a quick look on the thread discussing it, but I currently have no way to test since I'm not using a dock (besides the monitor). My connections are direct to the TB ports, so technically I'm not affected by this.

You need to determine based on how you will use your MBP if any of these issues will warrant a return. Also, I would have waited to add AC+ until I knew I was keeping the machine, but that's just me. If you are returning the machine, getting the refund on AC+ shouldn't be a problem.

If you aren't comfortable, you can always return and simply repurchase later. There are a lot of changes coming that should be revealed at WWDC, so who knows, you may find another reason to return the MBP.

My concern is the future resale value of the 2020 13" MBP with the MacBook ARMs in the horizon. I don't want to purchase a 2020 13" MBP only to have the value plummet in a few years.

Maybe wait until you get the machine until you decide whether or not it's a disaster?

strangely this was also my experience... running like a champ now

Not really strange, there's a lot of indexing of all sorts of data in many applications that the Mac does. When you import or load all of your data, all of this needs to be done in a big hit for all the new data it sees. This is normally done one item at a time as new content is created, but if you've imported a heap... it all happens at once.

I returned my 13 inch and I got a great deal on it, got the high end 10th gen for $1500

but even at those savings, the battery life was no bueno compared to the 16 inch.

I didn't really have issues w the battery or fans, but I didn't push it too hard, just a little WoW and multiple tabs + youtube open. So I can't comment on all of those, but the battery life went from 10 hours to 4-5 hours real quick, and stayed there. And again just youtube + other tabs open on safari

I returned mine last week due to high temperature concerns and gave Windows a shot. The hardware is about the same, price is better and I am happy after 11 years with Apple.
Battery life was not very good and the fans run like crazy.

There can be minor QA variances from machine to machine but the vast majority of products don't see problems (the butterfly keyboards were an exception but even then, I'd guess that it was in the low to mid single digits). You are going to see every single problem that people have with MacBooks in this forum and they could be hardware, software, configuration issues or bugs. I have had quite a number of MacBook Pros in my family and I read all of the problems here and don't see them, particularly in our 2014 and 2015 MacBook Pros.

If you run into a problem, you have several weeks to return it. I would not have a problem buying a 13 or 16 right now. The hard part is deciding on the configuration.

I haven't used my 13" MBP off charger too much yet and have no USB 2.0 devices, so I can't speak for those yet. Haven't had any of the other issues. Haven't even heard the fans come on yet and I'm using an external 4K monitor.

Out of curiosity, which machine did you end up with?

I ended up giving this Samsung Galaxy Book Ion a try:

And so far I am very happy with it. You can not compare both machines, because they are different though. I paid $1099 for the little Samsung, I also kept my MacBook Pro 2015. The computer runs great and the temps are very, very low plus it has some nice features.
MacBook build is better.

"Stop reading internet forums" - lol, do not follow that advice, it's really bad. The truth is always in the forums, not the reviews! NOBODY pays users in forums to share the problems they experienced.

Yes, the 2020 13" does get hot without any real heavy usage - I have experienced this daily.
Yes, the 2020 13" gets super loud- when it gets hot randomly, obviously the fans start blasting to prevent the laptop from melting.
Yes, the 2020 13" has ridiculous issues with USB 2 connectivity. You need your USB 2 devices to work? Bad luck, there is a wide-spread issue with USB randomly losing connection. Apple have made 0 statements about it and refuse to discuss it directly so far. I have created a thread about this myself, there are huge reddit threads about it and there are several articles already written about it over the last week.

But hey, it's easier to experience "sunken cost" fallacy and ignore the forums.

I am currently waiting on the authorized service to reproduce the USB issue, because over 2 days they have not been able to. Funny how everyone who has the issue experiences it over minutes, or hours - these people at the service need to tell us how they use the macs so we can solve the problem! Well, they did tell me - they connected USB devices to the hub and left the mac untouched for two days straight. So here you go! Simply do NOT use the mac at all and you will not experience any issues whatsoever.

Buyers remorse? Absolutely, mate, absolutely. I spent so much money on a broken design that does not support normal USB and overheats out of nowhere. It's my fault, of course, for believing the 2020 models can be any different. They could not fix a broken keyboard design for 4 years, an elementary part of any laptop which has been polished for decades upon decades. Now they can't do USB right. But really, ignore the forums and keep throwing money at them, that's the best recourse.

Not sure if this is related, but I had a similar problem with my MacBook Pro battery draining like crazy overnight or in sleep mode. The problem turned out to be Apple enabling a ping type mode in a update at somepoint so that you can locate your Mac when it’s in sleep mode. As soon as I disabled that (through terminal) the battery went back to draining ~1-2% a night.

Stop reading internet forums!
I know. Forums are echo chamber for people finding solution to problems. It’s a minority. I’ve been on Mitsubishi forums, 350z, vw gti, bmw, and all those forums you would think those cars are unreliable rust buckets but those cars I owned were great and didn’t cause me problems. Same with the new MacBook Pro 16 where people complain but it’s been great and its been quiet.

You simply need to keep in mind that for every person posting on an Internet forum there are likely 10,000 or more out there without the issue - whatever the problem is.

Agreed, I've stuck with 10.15.4 and no issues.

10th gen i7/16gb/512 here

I feel your pain with some of the performance issues. Not a slam dunk purchase for me either.

If you are a mission control user, I recommend staying on 10.15.4 until Big Sur. I updated to 10.15.5 and had a TON of problems with choppy/laggy animations with mission control in particular but also with scrolling. I tried the 10.15.6 beta - didn’t help.

Lag happened on both my 2020 i7 MBP and 2020 i7 MBA/16gb (which I returned). Only way I fixed it was to roll back to 10.15.4 on both devices, which got rid of 90% of the lag, so I can confirm that there is an issue with 10th gen devices beyond 10.15.4 that has not been addressed yet in the 10.15.6 beta.

If you update to 10.15.5, please make you have a 10.15.4 backup!

Regarding temps, only gets hot or loud when OneDrive is indexing. Ive had a ton of stuff open and had a 1 hour zoom call and it was staying quite cool - around 70. Couldn’t hear fan noise but I’m sure they were on. Idles around 55. Much better than the MBA which sat at 100c all the time and felt choppy when multitasking even on 10.15.4. MBP is way smoother, even with light loads.

Battery life is OK. With 75% brightness and safari web browsing and using a large (80mb) word document with 5 PDFs, Spotify, mail, notes, messages, Anki, 2 powerpoints and lots of window switching with mission control, I’m getting 5 hours if I’m not careful, 6-7 hours if I watch what I’m doing. Definitely better than 4 hours, definitely worse than 8 hours.

Would love it to be better but I can live with 6 hours if it’s consistent.

Maybe Big Sur will help.

Apple authorized service returned my machine after reporting the USB problem with "no issues found". But they went FURTHER than that and introduced new physical damage to it! I now have a chipped part under the touchbar, where the edge is. It's small, but my laptop is no longer new. I paid almost 3k dollars for a new machine and now it's chipped. I take good care of my things and this is not what I wanted.

This is the worst experience I've ever had with buying a new computer! I DEEPLY regret buying this product and I think it's my first and last apple device. And here I was planning to switch to iphone, and iwatch, from the samsung gear I have now.

No freaking way.

I’ve learned never to send anything to Apple for repair. Every time I did my device was returned in piss poor shape. Beyond that, I watched a “genius” man handle my new MacBook Pro a few years ago in a local store.
