Car play itself is designed poorly. It's limited due to safety and you have to switch between apps to use GPS / music simultaneously. Not to mention, it only supports Apple Maps.

Not sure what you mean. I've only owned my first CarPlay-equiped car for a week, but so far I've found that whatever it can do can be directed using Siri. Maybe it depends on the head unit.

The limitations I totally understand.

I've had CarPlay in my Volt for over a year and I love it. Wireless over WiFi is not that appealing because I don't want to have to active WiFi in my car, just another monthly bill. I will just keep plugging in my phone. No big deal.

I should have known, have had the ilx-007 for less than 6 months and a new version comes out :( I have no experience with other CarPlay systems but I love the fact it has a deticated Siri button

I think the device will create it's own wireless wifi network. I think it will be its own hub and the car will automatically join when you enter. That's the only way I can see this working. I can't imagine what life will be like when this is more widespread, though.

Oh yeah, That's exactly what I want; is to sit in a chair with my iPhone, and use the most battery draining features of it, all while being 6 inches away from a charging source, and not charge it. o_O
Who said you couldn't charge it?

The day Apple announces offline maps for CarPlay, I'm in. Until then, no can do.

Who said you couldn't charge it?
Not saying you couldn't. Asking why you wouldn't.
The plug is right there. Faster and more reliable connection AND no massive battery drain.
Why would you want to drain your battery when there is a plug right there?

Car systems are just **** aren't they, I have a Mazda 3 2014 SP25 and they've been waiting for CarPlay for 3 years, the internal system just sucks.... wel it less than desirable anyway

Looking into the Android systems with Apple Music, cause all I really needs is Waze, Google Maps, Apple Music and some sort of Overcast type app

There are a bunch of scenarios that wireless would be nice. One being the fact that you can keep your phone in a bookbag/purse while making phone calls and using CarPlay.

Just out of curiosity what would be the advantage of having wireless car play if you're going to also plug it in to charge it?
You can just charge the phone when you need it. If you want your phone charging every second of using CarPlay, then the wired version would be fine.

I guess i'm not used to short trips. When I leave home to go to work I'm on the road 8 to 16 hours. Most of the jobs I'm on are 20-30 minute trip each way.

Android Auto is, for many reason, the superior product. Apple's UI choices in recent years (CarPlay / Apple TV) leave much to be desired.

Since I have an iPhone and not an Android, I am purchasing an aftermarket Chinese Android radio, which offers WAY more functionality than any name brand radio does:
Waze / GMaps / YouTube / Apple Music / Spotify / Pandora / Weather Radar / Web browser / Shazam / Rear Camera support....the list goes on.

Steering wheel controls work, they're cheaper, sometimes they can be fitted to look stock, and have larger, higher quality multi-touch displays that can be seen clearly in the daytime. They also self-dim at night.

I was excited about CarPlay, but Android has won this battle for my money.

man get out over here with that crap all of that.

android auto looks terrible, the graphics in some places you can see what looks like white cut outs around icons. the voice sounds horrible that speaks to you, it relies on BT which is far inferiors to plugged in or a wifi connection.

I have NO idea what you mean by switching between apps to use the GPS??? yes you can only use apple maps but on android auto you don't have waze, not sure what you Chinese android radio you are speaking of but if a radio wants to let you use a web browser they defiantly don't care about safety and they should as well as you too.

Ahh. OEM navigation systems seemed to be tied to moving / not moving and that can be bypassed so they think the car is parked and it's fully functional.
Yup. There's an awesome bypass module you can get on eBay for 50 bucks that not only bypasses the safety locks on your Ford OEM gps but also let's you engage the backup camera while driving, something that really comes in handy if you're towing and want to keep an eye on your cargo without having to pull over constantly.

900$? For a car radio? Does Apple do anything affordable anymore?
Yeah that's not even expensive as far as display head units go. I have the Alpine X108U installed in my truck and I paid 1,499 for it, which is actually hundreds less than MSRP. Factor in four aftermarket speakers, a 12" subwoofer, a 5 channel amplifier, sound dampening mat and an overhead DVD player for the rear seats and I've dropped around $3,600 on sound system upgrades. If I'd had them professionally installed instead of doing it myself, you can add another 1000 to that easily. Quality isn't cheap.

Wish alpine would get away from the buttons...
Just a clean sleek display would be perfect. Steering Wheel Controls for Volume control, Siri activation, and changing the station is all I need. There can be on screen buttons for anything else... The need for those buttons also goes out the door with CarPlay... smh

I was excited when Carplay first released and can't wait for wireless Carplay.

after owning Pioneer AppRadio 4 for over a year, I don't use Carplay anymore. even if it has wireless, I won't use carplay for one simple reason: very limited functionality. just a few apps supported, mostly apple app. No Google map or others.

Apple went overboard with safely and pretty much crippled iphone functionalities to bare-bone.

I think you're underestimating the tremendous battery drain that wireless carplay would cause.

Not everyone has steering controls. I've bought quite a few vehicles since my first car in 1977. None of them had steering controls.

OnStar can also support a wi-fi hub. I have that now on my Bolt but it seems pretty useless to me. Once the OnStar free intro is over, I don't expect to pay for it.

I've only had CarPlay for a few days, but the first time I told it Siri to route me to someone in my address book, and it appeared on the car's display in seconds, I was hooked. I suppose you could find something not to like. The limitations are appropriate to what you should be doing while driving.

I mean, I don't get the point of dropping that much money on a sound system. The stock sound on my car is fine, and I can replace all of the speakers with better ones for about 400$. Your 3600$ sound system would be half of what I paid for my car in the first place.

To each their own. But I could never justify spending that much on a head unit.

Too expensive !!! My iPhone has every necessary component, this thing is just a touchscreen... or is it ?!

Bro, you can't give a description like this and then not link to the product.

Well the truck set me back $42k after incentives, so another 3-4 grand isn't a whole lot especially when you consider I would have easily paid three times as much for the same functionality with much less quality had I gone with the OEM options. They wanted nearly 2 grand along for the rear seat DVD player, which I coughed at as I knew I could do the same for 400-500 dollars myself in about an hour.

But I've been tinkering with my vehicles since my very first truck back in high school, a beat up 1984 regular cab short box F-150 flare side so this wasn't anything new to me. Admittedly this install was a little more complicated than my first, a simple Sony discman velcroed to the dash above the radio and wired in with an FM modulator that piped in the music by tuning the radio to 88.4, and replacing the two front paper cone speakers with a nice set of Pioneer 5x7's. In one sense it's a point of pride, but mainly it's due to my love of music. I listen to everything from John Denver to Povarrati on my commute, and a well designed sound stage makes a world of difference. The sound dampening mat cuts road noise and vibration easily in half when installed under the carpeting and around the back of the cab and inside the doors like I have, making the upgrading sound system sound just that much better and without making the truck rattle when the subwoofer hits the way cheap the cheap civic next to you at a red light usually does. The rear seat DVD player has been a godsend for the kids and my wife and I on long drives, as I can put in a USB drive loaded with their favorite movies, put on their wireless headsets and never have to dread hours of "are we there yet." Yes, it's not cheap, but like most Apple products a good sound system properly installed is worth every penny.
