Already paid, but now have free year available

As per title, I paid in advance for a years subscription for Apple+ but now have bought a new device which has a years free sub.

If I activate it now, will it run from now, or will it start when my years paid subscription expires?

I just did. They said I can’t activate a free trial,if I’m already an annual subscriber. Suggested using a different Apple ID.
