Long press on an image in Safari and along with button options that appear the alt text for that image will appear above those buttons.

Yeah, ok, managed to find a valid image for this.

I couldn't do it earlier because it doesn't work for images that are links, you just see the URL. A shame because most images are links really.

Also, I was so sure this wasn't working because I went to the wikipedia article on the alt attribute and their example (not a link) didn't show me any alt text. But now I can confirm on a desktop browser (Mac Chrome) I don't get any alt text when I hover over it either, haha.
