I need to constantly enter the machine's local password while developing code. The fingerprint is easy on the MBP, but it's a pain on the Mini. Is the only alternative a keyboard with a fingerprint? Are there any alternative peripherals?

there’s no alternative except disabling the password verification. Apple doesn’t allow third parties access to Touch ID

There are no alternatives... unless you count the Apple Watch–but to me that's more of a pain than typing the password manually.

I’ve seen videos where people disassemble a Magic Keyboard with Touch ID; remove the battery, circuit board, and touch button; and assemble those into a 3D printed case. Seems excessive to me but I’m okay with using a regular Magic Keyboard so that makes it pretty simple for me.

If you absolutely can’t stand a Magic Keyboard, you can look into that option.

I've also seen videos of various keyboard cannibalizations to get that circuit, but it's only good if you have a keyboard to throw away :\
