Interestignly, I've noticed in the past two years a lot of my professors now explicitly solicit PDFs, as in, "please complete this assignment in Word DOC format, or as a PDF"

Yes. I don't really know who's academia still uses MS Office formats to exchange things. At my university, almost everything is PDF. Every once in a while, you'll get a doc or ppt, but even the Powerpoints are often exchanged in PDF.
NeoOffice is OpenOffice. OpenOffice's Mac version runs in X11, so it's quite an ugly application to run. NeoOffice, while not being any kind of beauty, is at least a native OS X app, and it's based on OpenOffice code. I hear OpenOffice is working on a native Aqua version, but it hasn't seen the light of day yet.

No, NeoOffice is a Java port of OpenOffice to Mac OS X.
I am running a native Aqua version of OpenOffice on my computer. It still isn't finished, but it is working. When I tried it 3 months ago, I couldn't get this far. So it is coming along.

Well, by "native" I just meant "not X11." In any case, it's much better than the X11 version of OpenOffice. I'm glad to hear OpenOffice has finally got their Aqua version working, though.
