So what is the actual resolution? The specs claim 3840 2160 which is 4k.

This thing is an abnormal size, meaning it is stretched wide. No where near 4K. Biggest complaint of the reviewers... LG shows 4K specs, but not 4K to the eyes.

Are you referring to 27UD88-W or LG38UC99? I can see what you mean if you were talking about the later monitor. However the one you quoted 27UD88-W looks pretty standard 16:9 3840x2160.

38UC99. 109 PPI. Near 4K.

Was close to getting the 27UD88 but the deal breaker was the USB 2.0 transfer speeds. I want to make my display a 'docking station' for my TB MBP with external HDDs. So far, seems like the UltraFine 5K is the only solution (UltraFine 4K is also limited to USB 2.0 speed).

I bought the 27UD88 W and it is great. 4k 60 Hz not as good as the lk 5k ultrafine
pivot mode using macos x or windows 10 -- the 5k ist not doing that using mac os x
it is charging my late 2016 15" touch bar Macbook pro using macos x, not windows

What res are you using in the monitor?

With a 4K monitor, you'll have to do 1.5x scaling, which will give you 1440p effective resolution.

It's sharper than 1X (obviously), but not quite as sharp as 2X. The problem with using 2X with a 4K monitor is that you get a paltry 1080p effective resolution.

Most people are fine with 4K, 1.5X, 27" monitor and the number of monitors in this sector proves that.

Me personally, I want 1440p at 2X and that's only possible with 5K. I've always wanted a standalone 5K monitor ever since the first 5K iMac, which is why I went with the LG 5K. It has its fair share of issues, but it's worth it for the PQ.

Next up, 8K 40" retina. :D

May be I will buy the 5k lg as well (if a two monitor setup 5k portrait and 4k pivot is possible) - but later when we know we get a new one, not some beta-test price-reduced rubbish.
