Wow! A recent resurrection of my thread. I was simply looking for something else to better organize my photos. Needles to say, I kind of gave up since the posting of this and haven't moved to any alternatives.

My events are a complete mess and I don't really even bother with it. I'm glad people posted here. I may attempt a trial of Lightroom and see how the photo management goes!

Events seems to think too much.

What I do is load my pictures with "image capture" into folders that carry meaningful names as events (i.e.. birthday lunch).

Then I drag drop that folder into iPhoto and things seem to stay grouped together.

It really all comes down to if your mind matches the personal organisational quirks of people in cupertino. That is not my case.

Many people don't like iPhoto's enforced Events view. But they are really just smart albums by date. You can make other smart albums with other criteria, or use LR or other applications, which have virtual folders/albums within them that allow almost any combo of pictures, as well as smart albums/folders. All without changing the location of your photo files in the Finder.

And try using keywords. You can set up almost any personal organizational structure you want, and that structure carries over to the Finder since keywords are searchable in Spotlight. Indeed, with keywording people don't even necessarily need LR or iPhoto or Aperture if they just use those programs for organizing.

Yup, I quite like iPhoto's automatic event creation. It is easy enough to re organise things, merge events, rename etc.

Started using Lightroom over the weekend. I like the control on organization better than iPhoto, however, I don't know if I have the patience to actually organize all my photos the way I want them.
