I'm a stockholder of both companies and I agree with you.

Really? Care to show me what other mobile OSs are available to consumers in the retail setting?
There are other Linux distros albeit not in great number but they are available.
Apple has a monopoly on app sales within the iDevice ecosystem. I challenge you to tell me how I'm wrong within the confines of my statement, which is one of the arguments that the DOJ is looking into. Don't forgot that Apple is being sued by the US govement for anticompetitve practices.
The US government doesn’t win every case. The DOJ has some power but doesn’t prevail in every ruling.

YouTube is downright terrible in the browser. Same for reddit, but I quit them months ago anyways so not really an issue.

I wish more companies were serious about web apps, but alas, that's not the world we live in.

I would disagree that Youtube is terrible in the browser. I consider it better because adblockers work (at least if you're browsing with Orion, AFAIK it's the only browser that lets you use Firefox extensions, but uBlock Origin works in it). Youtube is unwatchable with ads. I deleted the Youtube app years ago because of the ads.

I am using YouTube only on my Mac in Firefox and sometimes Safari. I never see any ads, there was a short period last winter when YouTube tried to block videos while adblockers are activated but that was always fixed within a few hours by filter list updates or instantly by disabling one of three adblockers. They tried it a few times within two or three months and in the end they lost against the adblockers.

Adblockers even work in Safari for YouTube. I don't know if it's Adguard or 1Blocker, at least I don't see any in the rare cases I use Safari for YouTube.

Don't know if this is working too on mobile devices but both Adblockers exist there too for Safari. I never even tried to use YouTube on a small display device like a Phone.

That has nothing to do with a monopoly.
That IS a monopoly. If I can't get an app for an iDevice without getting mommy Apple's permission, then Apple has an absolute monopoly on iDevice app distribution.

When Apple uses that monopoly to extract a highway robbery 30% cut, not just of sales of that app, but of any transaction taking place between that app and another party, Apple not only has a monopoly but also is unlawfully abusing that monopoly.

If Apple didn't have the high priced lawyers and lobbyists, the US would have shut down their unlawful scheme over a decade ago.

You can't be a monopoly of your own products. Apple does not have an monopoly on smart phones.

Edit: Also, almost every online platform charges the same fees.

Seems not to work on iPadOS 17.6. I just tried it with my old iPad Pro from 2017.

But I have it on my iPhone with iOS 18 now. There are even only 2 Apps in it, one is a game called Delta and the other one "Clip" is a clipboard manager. They are free and then there are Betas of both that cost $3/month and a Delta Legacy is also there for free, if you count that too it's three apps. ;)

I also have the Setapp store. There are about 50 apps in it now. When I installed it I think there had been only 6.

Just installed it on an iPad Air 3 with iOS 18. That's working.
Thanks! I thought iTorrent was on the AltStore as well.

Don't know iTorrent. I have a Beta App in TestFlight called iAppStore (or something similar), what looks like an alternative AppStore too and it can be intalled everywhere, where TestFlight is running. But it's completely in Chinese. Don't know what that is. I didn't really trust it, so I did nothing more than opening it and saw many apps offered in there.

Will Apple allow alternative AppStores to be downloaded directly from their own AppStore?

So what was the issue the United States had with Microsoft? They only made Internet Explorer and included it with Windows - well within their rights as the developer of Windows, right?
You need to read up a little because you seem to not understand what was going on with MS and what they were doing at the time.

If I remember correctly it somehow was deeply integrated into Windows and deleting it made Windows almost unusable or something like that.

There was a time when Internet Explorer was better than Netscape because the Navigator became a Communicator, what had been something like Firefox and Thunderbird in one Application and was completely overloaded and slow.

I can't remember what had been my main browser directly after I began to dislike IE. I never ever used Chrome. So it must have been Firefox.

In 2013 I switched to Mac and liked Safari from the beginning. But they lost me with this extension change to Firefox again. Sometimes I use Safari but even with several ad blockers I can't get rid of all those annoying cookie notices that are everywhere, many of them still get through.

Browser was one small part of the DOJ case, OEMs was the bigger issue.

If developing a commercially viable mobile operating system is no big deal, why are there only two in the EU?

Because it's quite expensive, small developers won't bother beyond the main 2 or 3 (since every different OS requires dedicated resources to have a working app), and, considering the huge influence mobile phones have on our lives, it was a good idea!

I thought the dma was about competition? It would help the little guy they said. Competition is great they said. Don’t think the big guys would have to subsidize a third party App Store in order to help the little guy.

The DMA is about competition and competition can be "great."

One way to facilitate and promote competition is by helping a small, fledgling company grown and compete against "giant" companies on price or in other areas. It’s better than seeing "giant" companies restrict/block competition. It's better than seeing "giant" companies take their products/services that used to cost money and give them away for free thereby potentially making it difficult or impossible for small(er) companies to compete.

So you agree that Apple's CTF is an anticompetitive move, then? Seeing as the little guy now needs sponsorships or subsidies to play ball.
