I don't think the fan goes below 2000 in the new MB. That isn't too bad since my Air bottomed out at 2500 and went to 6200 quite a bit.

I think others have reported their fans running slower than 2000rpm. The noise my computer makes is annoying...I think it is a dud, and I just have to accept this and move on.

I just bought a stock 2.4 from best buy, and I find it to be quite noisy. The fan does not go slower than 1999rpm, and there is a steady (albeit quiet) "fan" noise from start up to shutdown...My previous macbook (2.0, 2gigs ram) ran silent unless I pushed it to it's limits. It's fans averaged 1599rpm.

Has anyone gotten their macbook's fan to run slower than 1999rpm?

Also, I have noticed that my hard drive makes a crackling sound when seeking...isn't that unusual for a new computer? I am seriously contemplating bringing this thing back.

What do you all think?

Wesley, I'm having the EXACT same issue as you, regarding the fan noise and rpm. I thought I was going nuts. It's a soft "whoosh" coming from the right side. No matter what I'm doing...I could have every program closed. Yet it persists. And the exhaust fan (according to iStat) NEVER goes under 1995rpm. What the duece, yo? My fiance's iBook G4 is dead silent. This thing definitely is not.

That all being said. I lurrrrrrve this MB. :)

Let me know if you take it in, yah? I'd be interested in hearing the "word" on the issue. I think I might visit an apple store in the next week or so...

My white 2.16 ran at about 60 degrees idling. My Alu 2.0 runs at around 50. My fan hangs around 1700-1800.

I've never seen mine get over 70C and 2002 RPM, but I have seen it drop down to about 1996 probably idling. I think the temp is not out of the ordinary. Even when it's at 70C though, the bottom does not get BLAZING hot, it's just warm.
Now I did talk to my Apple Rep and he told me some mb's are louder than others. I'm on number 4 of the Alu MB and it's still getting a little humm from the HD side, but i'm not worried about it. Everything else runs like a CHAMP!
I think it may be that the aluminum might be amplifying the noise in some of them?!?

those numbers were in F°...i am at 47C° and my fan is still running at 1999rpm! it has NEVER gone below that. I think I have a dud!

Should I return this? I would hate to do a swap at Best Buy...all of my information is on this computer...

If I back it up on an external hard drive, do you think I can restore all my information back on a new macbook?

Sorry for the novice questions, but I am extremely frusterated right now.

Thanks in advance.
I have a 2.0 Macbook and your temps and fan speed are perfectly normal...as to your noise problem, I'm not sure. Mine is extremely quiet. I have an older 1.83 whitebook and an air and the new macbook is the quietest and coolest apple I have ever owned. I haven't had any heat issues at all even under intensive tasks. The fan idles at around 1900-2000 on the new macbooks.

this fan noise has been bugging me as well.

the new glassbook is definitely quieter than my macbook with apps running...but for some reason, at idle, it's louder than my idling white book.

i can hear a faint noise coming from the fan.
it's almost undetectable with background noise going on...but if youre in a dead silent room, it's definitely there and you can definitely hear it, but, again, it is faint--like a gentle whirring.

im just curious, is everyone else experiencing this?
my fans are usually at 2000rpms like most of you guys. i kind it quite odd that some users with glassbooks are getting fan speeds less than that of 2000rpms

Yes, I think it's the hard drive.

Fan noise on New MacBook Pros

There is a slight whirling sound coming from the fan on my new MacBook Pro...its difficult to notice unless you're in a quiet room and then it is very noticeable. I took it to the Apple Store and they found some paper bits inside the fan housing...I wasn't the first to bring this to their attention. They told me that apparently during the packaging process it, many of the new MacBook Pros got little bits of paper in the fan...making that clicking sound.

Remember when you put a card in the spokes of your bike as a kid? Same concept.

My new 2.4 MB runs pretty quiet no matter what I've done so far, tho at idle in a silent room i do hear the faint whirring of the fan. According to iStat I haven't really gotten above or below 2,000 rpms either. Oh, and it's the coolest laptop I've ever owned (in more ways than one ;)).

so did they open up your mbp and remove these bits of paper? if that's truly the reason for the noise, apple should most definitely be fixing our notebooks
