I have a 20" C2D iMac and am confused about a few things. I have searched the forums already but have found conflicting answers to various things.

I have loads of old IDE hard disks from old PC's and want to start using them again for extra storage / backup for my Mac.

All of my USB ports are in use and I don't really like using hubs with cables running everywhere so have decided to try and get hold of a firewire HDD external enclosure so that I can connect my old HD's via my Mac's firewire port.

First of all, is this possible?

Secondly, if it is possible, what would you recommend as everything seems to be either for 2.5" HD's (which mine are not), or USB.

    Thanks in advance

Sure, get an enclosure like this one. Works just fine but be sure not to order a SATA enclosure by mistake, IDE is on its way out.
