The backlight on my MacBook went out suddenly today, no idea why.

Is there some way to replace it without having to replace the entire display assembly? It is very difficult to get the assembly apart, but I will be on break from school and will have plenty of free time to fix it if it will save me a few hundred bucks.

So is it possible to replace the backlight only, or is it a part of the lcd panel?

I know it's the backlight because the LCD is still on, I can see it if I shine a light on it, and the brightness buttons don't do anything. The little icon comes up and says it's on max brightness, but the screen is still unreadably dim.

I did work experience at an Apple Reseller a few years ago and they mentioned the fix for this problem was reasonably simple. I can't remember what it was but I also know from experience that it could be unfixable. I'm currently typing this on a PowerBook that lost its backlight four years ago that they said was unfixable.

Its more likely to be an inverter than a backlight.
