Aluminum vs Tile: First drop of my iPhone 5

Well, that didn't take long! Had my first drop of any iPhone since my first gen. Ironically it took place while cleaning off the fingerprints to try on a new case. I had the phone wrapped up in a micro fiber cloth, cleaning it up and the dog was going nuts trying to get outside to chase a squirrel. I set the cloth down and let him out. When I came back I grabbed the Otterbox case and pulled it apart. I noticed there was a smudge on the rear lens (where the Apple logo show through) and grabbed the cloth to clean it. Yep, forgot the phone was wrapped in the cloth and it tumbled straight to the tile floor.

Pic attached to show the results. This would be about a 36" fall. Not bad, all things considered. In normal light you can't even see it. I had to take a flashlight, get just the right angle, and zoom in close to see it. The shot makes it look far worse than it is.

So, just in case you were wondering what would happen...

Wow looks pretty good. Glad you didn't get much more than that.

So confirmed ways to remove the black coloring from the metal.

1. Attack viciously with keys.
2. Drop it 36" onto tile.

That happened on TILE? Ouch. I have dropped my SIII on concrete a few times, not even a scratch. Guess that "cheap plastic" aint so bad after all :)

LOL, the plastic isn't so bad, but the phone is. Go away "iPhonefan".

To OP: Ouch, that metal really warped on the impact point! Well at least you're being calm about it. Some people on this forum would probably be jumping out of their windows.

It sucked that it happened on day one, but I guess it's not a big deal since it takes just the right light to see it. Maybe I should play "Gravity" by John Mayer on it.

Camera still working fine I guess??

Yes. I was worried given what corner it hit, but It really is limited to the rim and the beveled edge. It didn't get into the back of the phone at all. I fired up the camera and focused on each corner and different points and it focused sharp every time.

The iPhone 5 is very durable! Holds up much better than the GS3 when compared in drop test. I'm very impressed with how solid the 5 is. :)

that anodized aluminum looses its black color and the silver really stands out..... I'm suspecting the white/silver iphone 5 will hide wear & tear better in the long run =/

I would be sick. No I wouldn't. I would have had a case on it the moment I finished getting it out of the box, but that's just me.
