It's unfortunate but don't worry about it, it's only temporary, you'll probably replace it next year with the 5S anyway.

The band around the 4/4S was stainless steel which is a billion times harder then aluminum.

I still rather have the aluminum, can't beat the lightness.

As much as apple charges for this phones I want titanium. Best of both worlds

That happened on TILE? Ouch. I have dropped my SIII on concrete a few times, not even a scratch. Guess that "cheap plastic" aint so bad after all :)

this guy has the nerve to put his .02cent and put a cheap plastic, bulky SamDONE Milkway3 phone into this JesusPhone5 post/topic. Look I heard SamDONE already making a G4 to release in FEB 2013!!! talk about a "successful" product that can't even stay up for a whole year.... besides we don't care what Samsung phones can do and not do..

He's going to return it and claim it happened in shipping.

That's pretty rude. Nowhere did I suggest such a thing, nor do you know enough about me to make that assumption. In fact, if you read what I posted, my general tone is that it's no big deal. I'll be replacing it with next year's phone anyway, so no biggie.

Why do some people feel the need to be ******s on the Internet?

Did you clean the smudge on the rear lens?

I did. lol, thanks for the concern! Oh the irony of taking enough care to clean smudges....and end up denting your phone. Brilliant!

Aluminum................... is soft.

Yup, it's probably one of the worst metals to use (other than lead!)

Titanium would be vastly better, but it would be much harder to machine, Aluminium is so very easy to machine as it's so soft and carbide milling cutters on CNC machine will last ages milling out Aluminium.

One day Apple may move onto something else. but as the moment I'm sorry to say it's more to do with the looks and feel than about strength and this is not true of just apple.

These things, whilst pretty are not really suitable to be used for thir main purpose without getting damage

Wirelessly posted

Glad to see the 5 is more durable than my 4S. My wife is upgrading soon from a practically indestructible blackberry so it will be good for her (she's dropped the bold several times).

i have dropped my 4 many times, and nothing has ever happened. the glass cover was the best. who cares about think think thin whne people then put the phone in otterboxes defender cases and make it look like abomination

I'd rather have a little softer metal in a drop like this. The little deformation will cushion the blow better than something more rigid, and will protect the screen from shattering and the innards from extra shock.

The down side is its easier to scratch.

It sucked that it happened on day one, but I guess it's not a big deal since it takes just the right light to see it. Maybe I should play "Gravity" by John Mayer on it.

Last time I played a John Mayer song, my fully stopped car got rear ended and pushed into another car in front of me. Don't do it, worse things can happen than the drop.

You have a very calm and mellow attitude about the whole thing. Some respond assuming they know what's going on. It's like walking through a well lit room with your eyes closed...pointless.

The good news is the iPhone 5 seems to be doing well in drop tests. Sorry to see you experiencing this first hand with your own personal device. It has a scar and a story, so that's cool :)

Well, that didn't take long! Had my first drop of any iPhone since my first gen. Ironically it took place while cleaning off the fingerprints to try on a new case. I had the phone wrapped up in a micro fiber cloth, cleaning it up and the dog was going nuts trying to get outside to chase a squirrel. I set the cloth down and let him out. When I came back I grabbed the Otterbox case and pulled it apart. I noticed there was a smudge on the rear lens (where the Apple logo show through) and grabbed the cloth to clean it. Yep, forgot the phone was wrapped in the cloth and it tumbled straight to the tile floor.

Pic attached to show the results. This would be about a 36" fall. Not bad, all things considered. In normal light you can't even see it. I had to take a flashlight, get just the right angle, and zoom in close to see it. The shot makes it look far worse than it is.

So, just in case you were wondering what would happen...

That sucks. Sorry to hear it. Take it back and exchange it for a new one? Looks like a manufacturing defect to me. ;)

Fraud discussions to ensue.

Sorry to hear this. Since I crashed a brand new Palm Pilot III many moons ago from a shirt pocket, this is always my worst nightmare, so my good thoughts are with you!

However, I am glad to see and hear that the aluminum absorbed the energy so nicely that the phone itself is not cracked and I guess this is the idea of the "soft" aluminum!

I agree. There is nothing worse you can do the put an Otterbox on your iPhone. Those cases are so hideous and bulky and ruin the iphone's design. Whats the point of having something that looks that nice covered in a nerf football?
