Hi.

Does anyone know how to make my iPhone and iPad permanently trust my Mac? Every time I click to perform a backup I have to put my PIN into my iPhone and iPad. It didn't used to ask for this every time so it seems to have forgotten the trust.

Many thanks.

M.

Are you using a wired connection?

Under the Face-ID and Passcode section of Settings there is a USB Accessories setting that is disabled by default. This is a security feature that locks out the port if your phone has been locked for an hour. This is to prevent access if somebody gets hold of your phone. I leave mine disabled (ie locked out).

No this is via Wi-Fi.

Were you able to solve this issue? I have the same problem.

Starting with 16.1 (I believe) backups via wifi and cable only seem to work after entering the password. I really hope this is a bug and not some strange security measure...

Nope haven’t solved this yet.

Same issue when connecting to iTunes on my pc via cable. When iTunes starts to try and backup you have to put in your security code on the device to "trust the computer". Seems like it's actually the trust settings that aren't being saved somewhere. Even if you connect the device, put in code to trust and do a backup, leave the cable plugged in and manually press the backup option in iTunes, it still asks you for security code input to "trust this computer"

Count me down for the Trust The Computer Bug. I have two iPhones (X and 12). and it happens with both and at least one of my iPads.

Since I updated my iPhone XS Max and iPad Pro to iOS 16.1 every time I connect my devices to my M1 MacBook Air via USB I get the message to "Trust This Computer".
I enter my passcode to trust the computer but the setting is not saving. If I unplug my devices and later plug them back in I get the same message.

Is there a way to stop this annoying message without having to reset my network settings on my devices?

I believe it is specific to the 16.1 update. I run Monterey and after the update to 16.1 is asking for a passcode on my iPhone an iPad every time I plug it in. I have contacted apple support and they are unable to figure it out.

I’m not getting a “Trust this computer” popup on my iOS devices, but I am getting an “Allow this connection” popup on my MacBook Air (Ventura). Once I confirm on my Mac by clicking okay, the iPhone connects without needing to enter the passcode.

Look at it was a way of encouraging you to use icloud. They want to obsolete cables and maybe pick up a few bucks if you choose more then then the small amount of free storage they offer.

For what it's worth, I'm running Monterey on my 2015 MacBook Pro as well.

Mine doesn't do that on Big Sur and iOS 16.1. I hit "Trust" a long time ago and never got prompted again. Of course, that's how it should be when you trust something.

I've been having the same issue since 16.1 on my 11 Max Pro. I haven't updated to Ventura yet on my Mac. I figure that may be why.

+1 to it should not be this way. Mine remembers after I agree to "Trust this computer" and it has always worked this way for years, for all versions of Mac and iOS, now on Ventura and 16.1. If it's different for other people, I don't know why.

Same issue here on my iPhone 14 Pro and my 3rd Gen iPad Pro since 16.1, both did not ask for the password over and over again when I made backups to my iMac on ioS 16.03 on the iPhone and 15.7 on my iPad. since the update and now running Ventura it asks for this every time which is tiresome.

I'm seeing the same issue with iTunes on a Windows 10 PC. Used to be "Trust this computer?" was only asked once. Now it's asked every time I try to do an iTunes backup. This started with iOS 16.1, and affects both of our iPads and both of our iPhones.

For the folks out there that use iMazing, and have found their automatic backups to fail or stall due to the constant prompt to Trust the computer, here's a message I received from their support:

We were waiting for the final iOS 16.1 release to understand if there will be a switch for the passcode request, or it will be permanent. We'll update our guides soon, and the last version should show a request to enter the passcode several minutes before iMazing is going to start a scheduled backup.

So, it's really not clear if this new behavior is expected, a bug, or if it'll ever change. I've always had my iMazing backups set to run between 2AM-7AM as to avoid other backups that might be running overnight or to impede me while I'm working (from home). In total, we've got 5 iDevices in our home, and having everything backed up locally to an external drive is great! Although, when I'm now seeing the prompt to enter the Lock Screen passcode each morning, and then having backups clogging up my home wireless network in the morning, has become a real PITA. And FWIW, I've been on the iOS & iPadOS 16 betas all Summer and have only recently started having this issue.

Hopefully this helps other folks to not waste their time trying to figure out why...

It is Apple. Same with iTunes/Finder backups.
