And when I'm in front of a computer, I just glance at the screen when I want to know the time, as the time is displayed on the menu bar. So it didn't occur to me that someone might want to glance at a watch while typing.
Yes, but I'm also glancing at other things, such as a running stopwatch or timer.
 
I have the S6, and when it was on Watch OS7, I felt the same way. I think it improved a lot with OS8. I don't find the dim-to-bright effect as irritating as it was before.

I just upgraded from an S4 (no always-on-display) to an S7. The always-on-display was not a requirement, but after a week I would say it’s a nice feature to have. I had no previous experience with this feature prior to watch OS8. Now I can glance at my wrist for the correct time and date (as well as other information from complications). There are some complications that don’t update/refresh unless I raise my wrist, but so far I think it’s just third party apps (And not even all of those).
