So, do you think we'll ever get Always-on display on iPhone? Given that Apple introduced it on AW 5, I really hope iPhone will follow suit soon. But apparently that won't be the case this year.

Do you think there's any hope in the future?

No, they want you to buy a watch and use that Always On Display.
Would love to see always on display on my iPhones! It would be great to glance at my phone and see the time date and battery level and maybe even the outside temp.

But I think you are right...Apple wants you to but an AW instead.

I love Always On Display. It barely drains battery life and it shifts to avoid screen burn in. So there's really no downsides to it. Always On Display only makes a real difference in battery life if you plan to have your phone off the charger for over 3 days or so. This is my experience dealing with Samsung phones. And I would love this on the iPhone.

I’d disable it immediately if it was a feature. I don’t need to have my iPhone display dimly activated all the time, when it’s not so much about the energy conservation, I just don’t find it unnecessary personally. Raise- to-wake is sufficient.

And it’s also relevant to say, this surfaces every single year, and I genuinely believe this is not a major selling point for anyone, not when the Apple Watch is a gateway to AOD with the S5. It’s Kind of like asking, ‘Will apple ever include a flashing LED light for notifications?’ [Which is another three as that’s all to common.] Obviously it’s not of value to them, when they could’ve implemented this technology like five years ago.

Useless ‘feature’

Most of the time your phone is in your pocket/bag. If it’s not, tap to wake. Literally takes a second. And there’s also the over sensitive raise to wake that triggers easily.

I turned it off on my AW S5 I have to say as it drained about 30% of the battery over 14 or so hours. I would probably turn it off on an iPhone too as I can’t really see the benefit for my uses.

I use it on my AW S5 and don’t get that sort of battery drain, great feature.

I could never go back to a phone without tap to wake.

They’ll probably include Always on display till they use LTPO panels as the Apple Watch does. LTPO is expected for 2021 iPhones.

I agree, it's a technical limitation at this time.

There are obvious user benefits with AOD on iPhone. Right now, notifications are pulled instead of being pushed. Unless you're staring at your iPhone, you need to check for notifications by waking the device. AOD would make the iPhone experience even better by streamlining that step.

I wish they would add it. I use my phone as my clock/alarm clock, would be nice not to have to tap the screen during the night to check the time. I use a stand up wireless charger so it would definitely make things easier.

Your iPhone must be broken. Because when I get a notification, the screen on my phone lights up automatically so I can see it.

They're not referring to getting a notification, but just having it. Like if it's been there for a while and you haven't checked it yet.

I don’t see it happening with the current screen technology. I also agree with Noob, that Apple wants us to keep buying the Apple Watch. I prefer the AoD on the watch, as I use the watch most of the time, compared to my phone.

Especially because the Apple Watch nightstand mode (or whatever it’s called) isn’t even always on.

It’s not generally a concern too much with image retention for OLED, but it is something that willcome up when you discuss AOD. As Long as you have the option of disabling AOD, then it shouldn’t be a problem for the majority, but it is the tendency for OLED panels to suffer from ‘burn-in’. Now, when Apple migrates away from OLED, (which is fairly antiquated),mini LED will be so much more manageable and efficient with battery conservation. Really, we are long overdue to shift away from OLED, and I suspect hopefully within two years, the Apple Watch will see micro-LED -and the iPhone/iPad will shift to mini LED.

I rather have longer battery life than always on which seems pointless on a phone

Yes because you couldnt just turn it off

Same nonsense defense of no 120hz at this point. Arguing not to have features for customers that you dont HAVE to personally use.

Why cant the CUSTOMER decide if they WANT to give up say the 3-5% (whatever it is) of battery for an AOD?
