Does anyone know if always on Siri works now with 2017 iPad after iOS 11 update? Could be good method for homekit if you no longer has to press home button to access Siri ( with iPad not connected to power )

I don't think it has the necessary hardware (not an update issue, needs a small chip to always stay on). From Apple:
If you have an iPhone 6s or later or an iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd generation), iPad Pro 10.5-inch, or an iPad Pro (9.7-inch), you can use "Hey Siri" whenever you want. You can also say your request as soon as you start holding the Home or Side button. Release the button to let Siri know when you’re done. iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st generation) doesn't support these features.
They likely wanted to have more things to differentiate the various iPads (and thus get more money).

I thought it was the M9 that enabled Hey Siri?

They still could have disabled it for some reason, like how they don't offer a calculator app on iPad.
If that's the case, then it's not because of missing hardware. It's a purely arbitrary decision for greater product differentiation (and $$$, I expect).

You have to set it up. I've used it on 2017 iPad and iPad Pro with iOS 11. Maybe its disabled in store?

For some reason the Calculator has never been in the iPad since day one. idk Why? You would think if most people are using the iPad for business that there would be one but no :(

I don’t think people use the calculator app at all these days. Especially if the iPad is used for business. There’s always spotlight calculator if one needs occasionally.

Just to clarify, Hey Siri works on your 2017 iPad when the device is not connected to power?

I use Hey Siri to control my Homekit devices on my 2017 12.9". Works great plugged in or not.

You mean Apple's calc or any? I use a calc on my iPad frequently. But I also get lazy and just ask Siri sometimes too.

I have a iPad pro and I have helped set up several friends iPad 2017 . We went through all the new features in iOS 11 including Siri on the iPad 2017. On both devices Siri works without connection. Its a feature in iOS 11. I can't remember which version of iOS it was added but its been there for awhile. I wanna say maybe iOS 10?

I use my calculator all the time for business. Spotlight is okay but its time consuming when you are trying to factor in percent. It's not a big problem but now you have to download an app and be bombarded with ads inside the app.

When I went though Siri setup on 2017 iPad at work, message at end of setup, unit must be connected to power. So it seems from what I read on Apple support Hey Siri only works without power connected to iPad Pro 9.7, iPad Pro 10.5, 2nd Gen iPad Pro 12" + iPhone 6S and newer

On iOS 10, Hey Siri requires the 2017 iPad 9.7 to be connected to power. It works fine on the iPhone SE unplugged, though.

While Apple highlighted the A9 and M9 chip combination as what makes "Hey Siri" possible on battery power in the iPhone 6s and iPhone SE, the 2017 fifth generation iPad with the same chip combination lacks the ability. End of story.

Oh I've only used it the 2017 with iOS 11. I own the 5SE and use Siri a lot. Its a nice. I could have sworn that it was there when I bought it. I know on the iPhone 5s it was added after the fact, but only when connected.

I'm pretty sure the iPhone SE had battery powered Hey Siri right from the get go. It's the 2017 iPad that didn't have it.
