Since, due to the always-on screen, I plan on turning off raise to wake, I'm wondering if my battery life could actually improve. The large majority of my current "wakes" happen because I want to simply check my home screen for new notifications.

I would think that raise to wake would be more efficient than always on, especially if you’re comparing always on for just the occasional glance.

Yeah, not sure how the power will compare without all of the accidental wakes that happen during the day currently.

If we can turn off the always-on functionality and use the S5 in the manner we used prior generations, we should see some anecdotal info within a few days post launch. Or even, I dunno, try it ourselves. :D

Well. The Verge's impressed..

I love the always-on screen on the Series 5. Apple’s implementation is better than other smartwatches I’ve used for two reasons: it legitimately doesn’t hurt the battery life as much, and Apple keeps a little color visible in ambient mode.

I am planning to do the same when I get mine. This will prevent all the accidental waking up of the watch. Might be able to save battery life.

I’m excited. I’ve wanted is an always on display as raise to wake often doesn’t work and I think it’s annoying needing two hands just to see the time.
I know what you feel. It is truly annoying to always have to raise to wake the watch or to tap the watch just to display the watch contents (needing two hands) just to see the time. This is not normal for a watch behavior even for a smart watch as even digital watches are always on display. Thanks to Apple for making its watch has a normal watch behavior.

It would be great if the always on feature gets "retrofitted" to us AW4 users...
Cant see it happening though...
As the always-on-display feature depends on a display driver hardware change, don't hold your breath.

Someone simply claiming it's a software change doesn't make it true.

I believe AW4 have the same screen technology but lacking the display driver and power management to implement the AOD.

Yep, just a WAG. If Apple could enable it with a software upgrade, they'd kill off the biggest reason most people would have to upgrade.

There is only one thing that may prevent it from making it possible on AW4. Apple wants to sell AW5.
I don't need always on screen.
Significant hardware differences on the display between the 4 and 5. This was explained in some detail in the keynote.

No.

The hands-on video I saw shows the watch face being dimmed as you lay it down on the table, and brightens up to the actual watch face with all complications when you pick it up.

I hope that there is an option to turn off always on when I need to conserve battery.
Probably will conserve very little battery if you turn it off.

It will be interesting to see what the battery life is like on the AW5 when you turn off the always-on display. Would be nice to have it push into the 24+ hour range. I don’t need to have an always-on display - heck even on my Seiko automatic, I’m not looking at my watch all the time, so not sure why you need to have your AW showing the time, all the time. This is especially true when I’m wearing a long sleeve shirt or jacket where the watch will mostly be covered up anyway.
You might get minutes more. You aren’t getting an hour let alone 6. The technology is duper efficient so it uses very little battery in AOD mode. That is why battery life is similar between 4 and 5.

i know people hope they can get a big battery boost by turning it off, but the most likely scenario is you will not get much of a boost at all.

Won’t be because there is a significant hardware upgrade to the screen to manage AOD.
