I went to an AT&T store this morning and asked if it was possible to get an iPhone on Friday, even though my current family plan ends in late August. The guy seemed to think I was asking about the availability, even though I thought I made it clear I was simply asking if it would be possible given my current situation. So I turn to MacRumors, for a better answer...

I am on a family plan until August 26. I will probably go with the $20/mo "Individual" plan, since the rest of my family will probably not get an iPhone. So do you think I will be able to get an iPhone on Friday, and continue on my family voice plan when it renews on August 26?

Yes, but you'll have to "restart" your 2 year contract. The phone will cost $500/600 REGARDLESS of who you are or where you are in your contract.

there is no "$20/month" individual plan.

you will be able to get an iPhone. you will just have to add the unlimited data package to your number on your current family plan.

You'll be able to buy it, yes.

You'll be able to put it on your account, [ASSUMING] yes.

You'll have to resign your contract, [ASSUMING] yes if they allow you on the iPhone plan, or [ASSUMING] yes if AT&T has a policy like most other carriers that allows you to resign a 2-year contract within the last 3-6 months of your existing contract, or [ASSUMING] no if you cannot get on the iPhone plan (the point of the 2 year commitment) with your current remaining contract time.

There's also no guarantee that you'd be able to get on an iPhone plan if you're not starting a new line or a new 2-year contract at the same time that the iPhone is being activated... in other words, if AT&T wanted to play dirty, you buy the iPhone now and put it on an existing plan and pay the $20/month (assuming that doesn't require contract commitment as well!), and then come your contract "up" date, you may not be able to get on an iPhone plan.

But who knows. This will require visiting with an AT&T rep on the phone, online, or in a store... some account research on your info, as well as possibly them looking it up in an internal guide or with an internal guru/support line. We'll just have to see.
