Just be glad it's during the evening. We have a 20+ year old who lives with her parents who screams bloody murder at 4, 5, or 6 am. Four complaints in and we are about to move.

Yeah... It's just hard because I can hear the parents over there trying to get the kid quiet... so at least they aren't ignoring her. They just suck at parenting :D

If they were completely ignoring her yelping I would have filed another complaint right away.... guess I just feel bad because their kid is a pain. They are probably fed up with her too.

Guess we'll see what happens.

Is it possible the child has special needs? If so it might not be possible to keep the child quiet all the time.

You sound quite un-American, Sue them, it’s your god given right to sue, sue and sue.
Sue the parents sue the building owners, hell just sue everybody, it must be someone's fault.

I mean if a person can sue about lost pants for $67,000,000, you should be able to sue for lost sleep.

I’m quite sure that there is a lawyer who will take on this on.

Actually, this possibility has also crossed my mind. The child might have special needs which would put a completely different perspective on the matter.

As a European, I must confess that some elements of US culture leave me entirely baffled, too.

Leaving the attitudes of litigation happy societies aside (and I find the ardent and intense US devotion to this practice incomprehensible), another constant on some of these threads is the elevation of relatively minor issues, matters, or complaints to the level of nuclear distress.

While I don't doubt that the noise the child in question is making is quite possibly infuriating, I am stupefied that this has become the subject matter of a thread.

I have worked in Third World countries, and in countries which have just emerged from conflict; sometimes, when I come home, I feel like an alien.

I believe the often over used but seems applicable here, "first world problems" applies quite appropriately.

No disrespect, but the little girl next door to us was not special needs and the only way she could communicate was screaming constantly. She eventually grew out of it (about 4-5 years).

Some people have absolutely no consideration for others, and that happens to describe my neighbors downstairs. First world problem? More like lack of manners and courtesy.

Indeed, the exact same thought crosses my mind quite frequently.

Yes, to my mind, it is the sort of thing I would describe as "a first world problem", - and reading some of the threads on this forum, I remain astonished at the sort of stuff that people get extraordinarily exercised about.

Not only get seriously exercised about, but choose to vent and rant - what an expenditure of energy - rather than attempting to address the issue at source.

However, a first world problem can also imply a first world solution. These are the OP's next door neighbours, thus, one assumes that they also share a common cultural set of values; notwithstanding reservations about doing so, I am surprised that the very first step - which would have involved the OP speaking directly with the parents - did not occur. At no stage in the proceedings were they addressed directly by the OP, and given an opportunity to attempt to deal with the matter before it went further.

Is there still no reason why this cannot happen?

Its an apartment theres an element of live and let live involved that you dont need to be quite so aware of in your own free standing home

In fairness though sometimes its down to the construction, coupled with the nature of the noise. Big thick concrete floors and celings, decent double glazing, heavy fire rated doors and good insulation like ours have? then not much of anything gets thru

Even if you arent so lucky in that department then chances are you'll tune out of most regular background noises. Trouble is very short sharp random noises from kids dont tend to fall ito that category - most likely they'll grow out of it long before you ever get used to it.
