The iMac is supposed to get hot the aluminium is a natural heat dissipator and it's not a glorified laptop either  . To OP I'd stick with the Pro if I were you.

considering that it uses laptop components stick on the back of a big screen, i would say its a glorified laptop.

yes its supposed to get hot but when it does it sounds like a jumbo jet taking off 2 feet in front of your face. If you can live with that during intensive work then good for you.

DESKTOP CPU and more powerful mobile GPU than MBP's.

mobile GPU more powerful than a GTX580 or a Quadra 4000 / 5000?, i dont think so, we all know that laptop GPU's are throttled back swell.

you can upgrade the macpro GPU as new ones are released, try doing that on an iMac.

Imac has a desktop CPU soldered onto a cheap laptop motherboard, stock laptop cooling.

Imac has laptop ram with no cooling

Imac has a cheap laptop DVD

The Imac has no real internal expansion potential unless you like pulling the glass off the LCD and exposing it to dust.

Macpro has PCI slots for sata / esata / sas / fibrewire / usb3 expansion cards.

You can think what you like, and frankly, i dont really care, but there is no getting away from the fact that the Imac is a laptop bolted onto the back of a 21 or 27 inch screen, so deal with it and move on.

Yeah, my I7 iMac bakes when there's an HD video encoding. It's really a home machine and probably not suitable for constant heavy duty use.

What?? Yeah playing a hd video needs serious pro computer power

I do HEAVY duty work on my 3,06 duo core 2009 iMac without huge problems..

What I'm saying is my I7 Imac runs extremely hot when encoding (converting with Final Cut) an hd movie. It performs well, but I suspect a Pro would last longer due to better cooling.
