I'm in Canada and I work as a contractor, from home and using my own computer, on research projects for a university. I have a university staff email.

I plan on replacing my computer with a new one soon, am I eligible for the higher education pricing? If so, would I still be able to use the computer as a business expense?

I've been trying to find the specific rules to determine eligibility but I can't find them on Apple's website. If you know where to find them please let me know.

Thank you!

In the USA, identifying the institution that your affiliated with qualifies you for the educational discount (read that carefully). That said, the discount is not very much. From Apple, I've never had to submit proof before purchasing something off an edu price list. Software from sites like academic superstore (and others) is a different matter.
YMMV in Canada.

Is your Apple ID tied to your university email? If so, you would definitely be eligible for the educational discount. If not, make a new Apple ID tied to it to use in purchasing the new computer.

I can't really help you with finding the rules. But while on the phone with an  rep asking some questions, the confirmed that since my sister was associated with a university, I could get the education discount, even though I personally am not associated with said Univ.. So if any of your family is assoc. with a school, you should be able to get the discount.

Thank you all!

From what I gather the requirements are very loose and I think I'm eligible so when the time comes I'll create an Apple ID with my university email and I'll use it to purchase the mac through the educational store.

Personally, I didn't even need to create an AppleID with an edu email. I'm in Denmark though, so it may be different here. I also didn't use the Online store. I went to a Premium Reseller, said "I'd like this config, PS, I'm a student", and that was it

If you mean using the AppleID myname@myschool.edu... not sure that's a good idea. When I changed institutions, changing my AppleID was not any fun. Try adding the .edu email to an AppleID with your permanent email first?
Well I don't intend to use that AppleID on the Mac, just to place the order.
