Am I not understanding Notification Center or is mine buggy?

I feel like either NC is poorly implemented, or mine just isn't working properly. Often times it will happen that things I have previously read on my iPhone will still show up in NC as notifications. Example: I'm out and about iMessaging on my phone, and then when I come home and sit down at my computer I re-receive all the iMessages as notifications and they stay in the NC until I dismiss them. Or emails I have read on my phone will stay in NC (but be marked as read in Mail). Is this just me?

Also, has anyone written a tweak yet to enable marking emails as read directly from NC? I want to more than just dismiss the notification...

this is unfortunately how the notifications work. iMessages i read on my iPhone still stay on the iPad and my Mac screen. its also the main reason why i switched to using separate apple ids for each device, because i dont see the need of having iMessages that ive already read on one device to stay on my other devices as "new"
 
Yeah I find it to be quite weird too. For example, I sometimes get Skype notifications, and I sometimes don't. The strange thing is that Skype does not support notification centre…

Are they actually showing up in NC? Or just on the right hand top side? Skype has its own notifications.

Well… honestly, I'm not sure, since it only happened twice (not sure why it never happened more, I use Skype all the time). It looked exactly like any other Notification Centre notification, and it didn't appear in the list. I have never seen any kind of Skype notifications before, not until I upgraded to Mountain Lion.
 
As you can clearly see in that video it does not solve the problem. Both the iPad and the iPhone receive the notification. Marking the notification is the only thing that will be synced.

I'm not sure if you might be misinterpreting the OP, or if I'm missing something. He's not worried about getting notifications on both his iPhone and his computer, but the fact that the notification doesn't disappear on his computer despite having been checked on his phone.

Although they disappear for me...

For me, Messages downloads the conversations, but only notifies me about the messages I haven't read yet...

I think you are missing something. The problem is that when you get a notification you get it on all devices, even when you open your notebook. The video clearly shows that. It also shows that when you mark the notification as being seen it will reflect that on the other device. What the video does not show is what happens when you open the notebook after you've marked it as seen. Will it still show in the notifcation centre but as being seen or will it not be shown at all?

The current problem is that you get a notification on all of your devices and you need to mark them as seen on all of them. It currently doesn't even work between Mountain Lion versions. With iOS 6 it will work between iOS 6 and Mountain Lion and hopefully between Mountain Lion and Mountain Lion as well. At least that prevents the problem of needing to mark the notification as seen on all of your Macs and devices. There is simply much more to it than just iOS 6. The video does not show this. It only shows two devices running iOS 6 (at least that is what I assume as it seems more logical to me).

There are quite some people who don't want that. When you mark it as read it should stay away. You handled the conversation already so it should not show up on any other device. Currently it still does that even if you have 2 Macs running Mountain Lion (again, it is more than just the OS, it is the backend (aka the servers) that need to be configured for this as well).

The way it is implemented now means that everything will be stored on Apple's servers which means that privacy is thrown out the window. To me that makes iMessage completely useless. Messages are the only things that should travel via the servers, they should not be stored on them. History is something that should be locally on the computer/device itself unless the user willingly chooses to have it stored on the server. It creates big problems outside the USA because things are stored on servers in the US by an American company which is subject to the law of their home country (USA). That means it does not follow the regulations in countries outside the USA which makes it unsuited for some people. Something to think about and that's the problem. Apple doesn't tell people this, people actively have to look for it. That's not always a lawful thing to do (in some countries you have to inform customers about these things).
 
they disappear from notification center my iPad when i read them on my phone.

iOS 5 on both devices (not iOS 6)

Guess I'm lucky then :)
 
Hey all, OP back again. Been busy and just getting back to the thread.

Here's an example that happened today of what I'm talking about:

Received an iMessage on my iPhone (iOS 5) Saturday evening, and read it. Only got back to my Mountain Lion laptop Sunday evening, and when I checked NC that iMessage was (still) there. I don't like this. I want the notification to disappear as soon as it's been read on any device, be it iOS or ML.

You've understood me perfectly in your other post above. The fact that Messages downloads the entire conversation and only notifies you of yet-unread messages is the exact functionality that I would like, and expect is supposed to be normal.

If you see the message disappearing from your computer when it is running it means you receive it on both the phone and the computer :p

Anyway, it would be nice if we could change the behaviour a bit. Currently the only way I can do this is by simply disabling Messages in NC. Whenever I start any Mac I have Messages enabled on it will bug me about the new messages no matter what I did with them. I think we need some serverside changes to stop notifications coming in that you've already acknowledge/read/or however you want to call it. That would solve the problem of incoming notifications and acknowledge notifications that are still shown by NC on other devices.

The message is ALWAYS received on both the computer and the phone for me. The DUAL ALERT on the other hand ONLY happens if I haven't already read the message yet.
