First off you're a smart 13 year old. I've always been more into technology since a young age but at 13 I could care less about the inside of computer and how hot things got. Thats awesome that you care about your stuff and look into it.

Haha this statement reminds me of when I was 6 years old in the early 90s... I attempted to make a water-cooling system for my computer... It didn't turn out so well.

I hope you didn't do what I did when I was around 10 years old... I kinda... poured water on the board in hopes of cooling it off while it was running...

Don't ever do that... the computer was never able to turn on again :(

*it was a cheapy, $400 but still I killed my parents desktop, now I build them and put safeguards in place :D*

Modern Core2Duos can go up to 120 C. If there is any danger of the laptop cooking itself it will shut itself down to prevent that. Do not worry and panic over it. Just enjoy your Mac.

By the way: The 9600 is the dedicated and the 9400 is the shared. :)

+1

Good advice right there:)

Hmm. Im 13. I guess that is young compared to some here

But yes I can get a small job I think. And when I told my mom how much the logic board was she said we can look into it.

Thank you for all the help everyone. I just worry too much. Especially after what happened to my HP =O

If I do find someone that will actually pay me money to do something around here... I will try to do it. Just so I can pay for it if my mom cant. My dad is being a big meanie about helping us out too >>

I'm right there with you (older though...). It took me 5 years of saving and then some for the computer in my sig. Love it to death:D.

Nope, I used a fish tank as a reservoir, its tubing, and the pump along with some metal pieces to act as a heat transfer. The issue was it leak cause i used duct tape to attach the metal pieces to the tubing, which destroyed it. Ah the good old days of playing little engineer.

purchase coolbook software, that should shave at least 5c off, I believe there is a thread with suggested configurations for it. Apart from that, use two foam blocks to raise the back of your macbook.

You should be good if you did that two

Get a cooling pad that elevates the computer to a reasonable hight. 1/4th of an inch to half an inch would be the sweet spot.

If the pad has some fans that's also nice but really doesn't to all that much. Maybe drop it by 2c to 3c at most.

Heh when I was 8 or so my mom came home to find her desktop in pieces... Later that night though it was back together and fully working... haha

If you are really worried take the laptop to a apple store if you have one close by and play the game right there for them and show them how hot it gets. If there is a real problem since your still under the original warrantee they will fix it.

If there is no local apple store call up apple tech support tell whats going on and see what they say. They may decided to fix it for you. My Macbook pro doesn't go above 72c no matter what I am doing. The temps you are seeing are kinda high.

I agree with the foam blocks, but I believe coolbook will make things run slower. Get SMC Fan control and ramp up the fans.

FOAM BLOCKS ARE A MUST (to help cool your notebook). And they give you a better typing angle.;) I use them all the time, even when I'm not doing intense stuff.:)

wow. if my CPU went above 90C i would definitely stop using any program and have freaking SMC fan control jam up the fans as high as they could go (without damage).

just because intel says they can go up to 102 degrees, doesn't mean everything else inside the laptop can.

My computer only gets in the high 80s if Im playing a game like Doom 3 or WoW all on high. It stays really low even if I am doing anything besides those 2 games.

So do you really REALLY think there is something wrong? Because now I am getting scared >>

Some say it is fine and others say its not! =O

My fans can only go to 6200 rpm and they spin that fast once it gets to 92c I think... then it stays in high 80s mostly...

I play WoW for up to 8 or 10 hours at a time on my Macbook (not Pro), and my temps are usually between 78-84* C. I guess it could get hotter than that without my knowing, I am after all playing in fullscreen mode.

In anycase-- I used to OBSESS over temps myself. I would freak it my computer was idling at 2* higher than the day before. When it comes down to it-- it really isn't worth the time you waste thinking about it. For now you have the warranty, just play and don't watch temps-- and if the system does fry itself (which it really won't), then it is a hardware failure, not anything to blame yourself for.

As I recall, my friend has an old MBP maybe from 2007, that would heat up to 110* C before shutting off... so you are well under the threshold. Not only that, but the newer computer chips are made to run at hotter temps. Plus the system will shut itself off before the temps get to a degree where they can cause permanent damage. It also won't turn on again until the temps have fallen to a safe level.

Play your games, be a kid, have fun. Get extended Apple Care if it will put you at ease.

Use the foam blocks. They really help air circulation.

Well I guess I wont worry about it then. The computer never slows down like its getting to hot. I will try foam blocks though just in case! Thank you!

I've had my Unibody Macbook Pro since January, and I do HEAVY rendering on it using the 9600m GT and it gets VERY hot, and it stays that way for a LONG time since I do a lot of rendering. My MBP is still running strong. The logic board most likely will not die. Technology is reliable, and getting more and more reliable. That being said, Applecare is definitely worth it. For example, my superdrive started acting up. So I took it to Apple, and they said they would fix it. I got it back, and it was working again. It would have cost $400 to repair, and I consider the superdrive fairly minor. Repairs are expensive. Spending $300 or so for Applecare is most certainly worth it.

Also, I discovered its best to not worry about your technology. Just use it and enjoy it, and don't worry about breaking it.

Dont bother with Apple Care. Your temps are good even if they seem high and your laptop seems really hot. The CPU and GPU & logic board can handle much higher temps. I remember two summers ago I was playing WoW a lot in the summer heat, my MBP would feel like it would melt. But to this day, thats about two years and its had no problems what so ever.

If i can, i would buy the extended APP...
i'm now without protection of APP... and i hope my mbp doesn't die on me, not until i can afford a new one.

so for you guys still eligible for APP, just buy it.. save some lunch money or something :)

I don't think you should worry. Apple wouldn't have put such a graphics card in your laptop if they know that it could die after long usage because of it getting too hot, these things go through a lot of tests before they release these on the market. They don't wanna end up repairing tons of macs and losing a lot of money... Think about it.

Ummmm... not quite. White iMacs are known for baking their own insides. Check this thread out on the apple mssg boards:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1516765. The heat fries the video card, which leads to a $900 repair. The current fix is to spin up the fans really fast all the time.

Apple's current response to these issues (you can also Google for the same topic) is... nothing. nada. no recall. no coupons. not even an acknowledgment of there being a problem.

Apple designs cool stuff, but I no longer give them the benefit of the doubt that it will last.

Hmm and I thought they fixed those problems =O Those are 2006 iMacs right?

Because I have seen 2008 and 9 iMacs run all kinds of apps.. render video and record like all at once and hardly get hot at all.

There have been some issues with Alum macs, but the largest portion of issues I've seen (and I have one that's affected) are the white imacs. Of course, the white plastic ones are also much older, so maybe they've just been cooking longer :)

I'd have to say, more than the screen/glossy issue, the macbook running sooo hot is my biggest complaint...Even the charger feels like it's about to spontaneously combust
