<facepalm>

Look, I'm going to be blunt here. A RAM upgrade is cheap as hell right now. If you can't be bothered to upgrade RAM - which is an extremely easy thing to do - then I think you should also quit complaining.

$20-40 and 5 minutes of your time, really that's all we're talking about here.

But why should I upgrade it, when it worked fine before? I do nothing different with my machine then did when it was new. Why should I suddenly upgrade then?

Mac2x, I just run the command and did everything you told me.

Also, is there some way I could tell OSX that Safari can only use a certain ammount of RAM? Like, set a limit of 500mb ram for Safari?

Have you upgraded any software? Even minor point upgrades to any of the programs that you use regularly, or running Software Update? Since you probably have and definitely should, chances are you need more RAM by now. Many updates that introduce even small features will also require more RAM. There's a good chance that your computing needs have changed since you bought that computer and you're simply not aware of that because it's been a gradual process.

No my needs have not changed at all.
But I have updated the software, and thanks for confirming my suspicion. Which is pretty evil if you think about it. That when you keep your Mac up to date, you are infact crippling the system bit by bit.

Nothing evil about it. Newer versions of any software will almost always have higher system requirements. It's called the advance of technology. Deal with it or stop using computers.

Like I said, it is not.

Activity monitor tells me that Safari is using 1gb of memory. ONE ****ING GIGABYTE OF RAM. And that´s for one pane.

The other programs I run, like Adium, Mail and such, is only using 20-30 mb of memory.

So Safari is the sinner here, obviously, and since Apple made Safari, that means it´s Apples fault, and not mine.

After I deactivated addons in Safari, ram usage dropped from 1 gigabyte down to 250 mb.

<snip>

If I were to change browser, which one uses the LEAST memory? I tried Opera out, which actually is made a few block away from my house, and it was fast. but it doesn´t look as nice as Safari does.

So you put in addons that quadrupled the memory usage and you are blaming Apple for this?

And did you have all these addons installed when you first started using the Mac when memory consumption was lower?

Since you prefer the look of Safari, then you have to decide which is more important. The addons, the look or sticking doggedly to your belief that you shouldn't have to upgrade the RAM.

Let's talk rationally about RAM here.

RAM is ridiculously cheap, and getting cheaper at an amazing rate.

When a resource is in this state, it makes sense to use lots of it if that can reduce the consumption of other resources. Such as CPU, disk accesses and your time.

Snow Leopard uses more RAM for caching stuff than Leopard did and the reason is goodness. It reduces the number of accesses to disk and gets results quicker. This saves YOU time. A little bit here, a little bit there. It reduces the load on the CPU since there are fewer disk accesses, and disk accesses take CPU cycles to set up and complete.

Will Lion use more RAM than Snow leopard? I certainly hope so!!!

If Apple developers are doing their job well, Lion will use more RAM and make my experience better. It may be faster, require less interaction form me, provide a better user interface etc or probably all of the above.

If your number one priority is RAM consumption over all else, then go back to using an operating system with a command line interface. It'll be perfect for you.

But let me say again. RAM is ridiculously cheap, and getting cheaper at an amazing rate. Expect that the laws of supply and demand will dictate that these laws will be exploited to do good things for you. Even if you whine

Blah blah blah fanboy. No thanks.
If RAM is so "ridiculously cheap", than why don´t you buy some and give to me?

I'm very sorry I wasted my time trying to help you understand. If you regard this as "blah blah blah", then I'm also sorry for you.

BTW, this "fanboy" started working in the computer industry in 1964 and managed to learn a little along the way, much from people who were trying to help me understand. I actually appreciated their efforts. I still do.
