You and I must be on two different paths as I got to have a SD card reader and do not really want to carry one in my pocket.

I will bet in three years there will still be laptops with a SD card reader. Maybe not Apple, but I am not limited to Apple hardware.

What are you using SD cards for, may I ask? You can't use a little guy like this or even a low profile 32GB USB drive like this ?

Virtually all enthusiast, prosumer and pro cameras use SD cards and those that don't are using CF cards. With respect to your link, I have used one of those and found it highly satisfactory. It's a simple matter to toss it into a camera bag or put it with your laptop charger - it works very well and takes zero space. The only risk with that one is forgetting it or forgetting where you put it. ;)

Ok, we were all expecting it to have a core M and there were a lot of rumours about the USB-C thing...I don't see why so many threads are "unhappy" about the the new mac.

I think its probably because most the guys on this forum are power whores and require good precessing...

But I think that for the average user, like myself, who use their macs for browsing the web of school work, or email, this mac is perfect. Sure, maybe having at least one normal USB would have been useful, but honestly the last time I use a port other than my power must have been 2-3 month ago

And the price...The price is actually amazing, they're selling a 256gb mac with 8gb ram for 1299$, I was expecting 128gb/4gb for that price.

I will definitely be buying the mac

Wow I must have looked at that 100 Times and never knew the new machines have Core M's? Yikes not sure if that machine will even be able to Encode a Movie without struggling, well makes my new Mac decision a whole lot easier.

Everyone in the world has different ideas of what constitutes value for them. For many people here , including myself, the new Macbook simply lacks value for the price paid. Still others will find value with it and purchase one. Just be happy that you can come on here and express yourself openly even if it is against the majority.

Digital Photography, NOT using it to supplement the hard drive! I need to move both still and video from my Canon DSLR.

I think you're probably right on both counts. I hadn't thought about the thinness of the lid, but yeah, the sharp vertices (points) of the Apple leaf cutout would likely attract all sorts of stress and might even tear. Particularly near the thin band of aluminum between the lower leaf point and the body of the apple itself.

It does make me wonder if the whole thinness thing is played-out?

Well there comes a point where thin can't get any thinner ... but who knows what that'll be. We said it for years with iPods, and yet they kept shrinking, but as long as there's a screen, we know it'll at least have to be 11, 12, 14 diagonal, etc, haha

My interest in this machine is primarily for travel and for stills and video as well. I have been using an iPad but having a retina screen on such a small machine is too inviting to pass. It seems to be such a perfect complement to my m4/3's kit.

To answer you're question: Yes

I am not happy with it at all. What I'm not happy about is Apple trying to fabricate the truth and not call it what it is:

an iPad with a keyboard.

If you need an iPad with a keyboard, this is your nirvana.

This line of thinking is so wrong. I wouldn't be getting it if it were truly just an iPad with a keyboard.

is any iPad coming with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD? nope!
Then it is not an iPad with a keyboard....quite simple if you ask me

I mean 8gb ram and 256 makes no difference. Pretend your iPad has that now. There. Same thing.

Then an iPad is just a iPhone with a larger screen?

My opinion is that this is new Macbook, together with the maxed out 15" MBP are the worst values in Apple's laptop lineup.
That said, I can see why a lot of people would buy it. High resolution screen, 256GB of PCI-e SSD, and 8GB of RAM are still good specs. The processor is weak but this is not targeted at heavy workload users. The one port is pretty criminal though no matter how you look at it.
Still, this would be great to take with you when you travel, or on vacations.
If this were priced at $1000 instead of $1300, I would consider one.

I'm a business international road warrior, and the new MacBook is nearly perfect. I love the form factor to be as compact and light as possible so that it disappears in my bag. Sorry, I've tried really hard but I can't use an iPad for traditional business use - slide decks, spreadsheets, documents and endless emails that are part of business life on the road.

I rarely use the extra ports in my 11" Air, so they will not be that missed with the exception of when I need to use an overhead but I'll have an adapter to deal with that.

The new MacBook is certainly a bit more specialized and focused. It will not be for everybody for sure, but for this audience its awesome.

Basically yes....without the phone capability

I understand why you say this, even though as it runs OSX it is so much more than this.

However, it got me to thinking.

Do you think apple will create a dual boot mac that can run iOS and apps as an alternative to OSX? We normally get questions the other way round but I've not seen this one asked before!

With a full-sized keyboard. And a bigger screen. And 4x the ram of any other iPad. And 256gb storage minimum. And a much more powerful processor. Running full OSX, which iPads can't.
But ya, totally just an iPad (cuz it's got a screen, a tiny logic board, and a big battery in a thin metal case with a single port)
Hopefully you're not a lawyer.

Totally wrong!

An iPad runs iOS. No compatibility with OS X or Windows.

This, totally. I'm out of the office once or twice a week travelling to different locations and I use Citrix client on my iPad, personally for Excel and other office applications the ipad is too fiddly. I'm sure other people manage it but I can't sufficiently well.

I love the size of the rMB, I'm looking forward to trying it out.

It's a lot more than an iPad.

Come back when typing on an iPad feels as good as on a Mac. And when I can run Xcode on iOS. Not to mention Photoshop, Maya, World of Warcraft, etc. etc.

Citrix on the iPad, I love it. No I don't, I've done it and I *hate* it! :D Right now, when I need to do something that I can't deal with on my phone or iPad with native apps I turn one of them into a hot spot and log in via Citrix on my rMBP. And THAT is the reason that this 12" 30 ounce rMB is so appealing. It will run Citrix on a retina screen that's not to big to carry and not too small to read. If it were just a little cheaper or had just one more port it would be a home run. As it is, I think it may be at least a triple, and that's not bad at all.
