Just for the sake of argument.

Instead of stretching, let's crop.

Is this a joke post? Surely you don't think that looks ok?

And whats wrong with black bars?!!? Internet be racist

I think it's interesting how we perceive aspect ratios.

4:3 at 16:9 annoys the crap out of me, yet my parents will complain that Friends (4:3) does not fill the frame of our TV (16:9). I guess if you're used to it, it's just perceived as normal, even though everything's 33% wider than it should be.

Don't get me started on pan & scan :p

So yeh, I still think the OPs made for bastardising the image like that, but if it floats your boat...

Half native resolution then.

I think you'll find that 512x384 is 1/4 1024*768, actually (half resolution on both axis).

It looks more natural when actually watching it on the iPad.
I can see where it would look "more natural" to you if you set your home DVD player to stretch widescreen videos to "fill" a 4:3 TV. I know quite a few people whose brains have compensated for the squeeze so that they don't even recognize it anymore.

No it doesn't. If it works for you, that's fine, but you can't convince us to believe something that's clearly not true. It is absolutely not the same or "more natural". If it doesn't bother you, that's great. It would bother most people, however.

I like to convert all my videos that I watch on my iPad (and I watch a lot) to the native screen resolution of the iPad. I hate seeing those black bars and it looks much more impressive when viewed in full screen.

Those black bars are there for a reason and they are black for a reason. If your brain can compensate for that squeezing then it won't notice the black bars either. It looks most impressive when watched the way it is supposed to be. If you watch a lot of movies then I am surprised you aren't more sensitive to composition within the frame, proportions, etc.

I also don't notice any squeezing when viewed on the iPad, so what are your reasons for keeping videos at its original resolution?

The same reason I don't listen to my audio at 125% playback speed, even if it lets me hear more music in the same amount of time.

I just use the AppleTV2 present in Handbreak. The black bars don't really bother and you forget about them when you start watching the video.

... Don't get me started on pan & scan :p...

Oh man I remember watching a televised Pan Scan version of Star Wars. Completely ruined the Mos Eisley Cantina scenes.

NO!!! I wanna look where I wanna look.

Oh God!!! This thread has turned me into the one thing I hate, a Film Snob XD

I think the black bars on a movie look worse on a white iPad than on a black iPad.

OP, I don't even understand why you are even pinching the video anyway.

Are you just adverse to both cropping and having the black bars?
