Am I the only one who thinks iPad is a stupid name?

Seriously, it cannot just be me, it's a stupid name. Regardless of the merits of the actual device, it sounds like something a girl uses when it's that time of the month. Not a marketable idea...at least I hope not.

Do I have a better name? Not really, though I don't understand the disdain of iSlate, or something cute like iBoard? I don't know, but iPad is a stupid name, and it won't happen but, what would want to call the iPad instead?

Be as creative as you want people, since well can you REALLY do worse than something which reminds people of pads?

Nope. its just you. I haven't seen a mention about it being a stupid name anywhere. If it was a stupid name, Im sure either it would have been made fun of on TV on SNL or something or by reporters in the newspaper. And definately on the internet. But nope, haven't seen a thing. Guess its just you...

iPad for iDad (iGrandad and iGranny, aka iNan)

Let me recycle from five minutes earlier:

The elderly will love this thing (the wealthier ones with nice teeth). So, perhaps the iPad is the perfect name for it. If you are 80 and are in a home, the last thing you care about is multitasking. You are happy if you are still able to hold the thing in your hands. If you can still read it, that's just fantastic!

No Flash? No problem! Motion picture is for young people, anyway!

No camera? Even better! That way the grandchildren don't have to worry, whether granny is just sleeping or there is something...

No, you're not the only one. You also aren't the person to note the similarity to a feminine hygiene product. Nor are you the first to make a thread like this.

Am I the only one who's first thought when I heard the term iPad wasn't about tampons and maxi pads? I thought about a pad of paper, or a writer's pad.

5 years from now, the first thing that will come to people's mind when they hear the word "pad" will be a mobile touch-based computing device. People will wonder why feminine hygiene products keep getting named after a small computer.

I agree! The name Ipad is not great! I think maybe iStation or iNote or iHub or Applet.

...and that is why you are not a member of the Apple Inc. marketing team, and likely never will be.
Guess, they chosed iPad because it would be laughed at!! Plus, they may have seen the MadTv skit! It is an awful name, but catchy! Just like the iPod.

the scary part is that I think this is likely to be true.

As to the comments as to the lack of originality of this thread, I was hoping for a light hearted thread, I suppose tone is hard to convey, and my command of language is not perfect, I'm not a writer, but if it offends your senses so much that I'm rehashing something then let the thread fade to obscurity.

Err, why would it be a problem if the iPad reminds you of a pad? I have a variety of pads in my room. I don't snicker at them, and neither does anyone else. They are perfect for their intended use, which is note taking.

If we should be snickering, it is at the name iPod. I mean what does that even mean? What exactly is a Pod anyway? At least iPad is related to an actual piece of stationary that is at least in some ways related (form factor, some overlap in use, etc).

iPod. What a stupid name.
iPad. What a great name!

BTW yes, you are the only person who thinks it's a stupid name. And why do you feel the need to troll anyway? Your trolling belies an uneasiness that this thing might actually become popular, when you personally don't like it. That must give you serious cognitive dissonance. I'm sorry about that.

OP: Do you think iPod is a stupid name since it has no link to a music player?

Holding onto the "i" is a clear sign of Apple's immaturity about the market in general. We don't want colored plastic enclosures, and we don't want HALF the apps from Apple to sort under "i" and everything else alphabetical.

SLATE should have been the name without the already clearly implied "i" for internet....OH I GET IT! IT STANDS FOR INTERNET? YOU MEAN THIS THING CONNECTS TO THE INTERNETS??!! BETTY SUE GET IN HERE! THIS HERE THINGYMAGIG GETS ON THE INTERNET!!!!!!!!! YYYYEEEEEEEEEEEHHAAAAAWW!

Please...take the red pill Steve and WAKE UP. I'm guessing that too many episodes of Star Trek Enterprise is to blame, but even they didn't use "i" in their name. Well, one more century to go before Apple figures it out I suppose.

SLATE was cool...ho hum, another thing that makes the newest announcement a depressing episode for Apple's history. At this point I hope Apple rescinds the entire product line for further Willy Wonka reflection sessions.
