To think I've taken a temporary second part-time job teaching (history and international relations) and have had 6 day working weeks (plus preparing my courses the evenings).

Anyway this is almost over and I did get two weeks fidelity leave as a reward for 10 years at my main job in addition to the 5 weeks I normally get. Oh we all get the week between Xmas and New Year's - adjusted a bit - off as well. Plus a few other holidays.

Me complain?

Go to work. Suck it up and contribute yourself to society like everyone else. Enjoy the weekends you have because it could be a lot worse.

I know I am being paid peanuts because my boss (who I report to) and everyone else in the office makes 3-4 times more and hes only 1 year older than me.

What type of job do you have and what jobs do the others have that are making 3-4 times more money ?

If you all have similar jobs, you should be making similar money.

Coincidently, this came across my Twitter feed.

Will A Six-Hour Workday Make Employees More Productive?

Hundreds of municipal workers in Gothenburg, Sweden’s second-largest city, will soon have just six-hour workdays at the same pay.

The municipal council will have two different departments, one that gets the reductions in hours and another that sticks to a seven-hour day in order to create a test and control group. The hope is that those with the shorter hours will taker fewer sick days and improve their efficiency. “We’ll compare the two afterwards and see how they differ,” Mats Pilhem, Left Party deputy mayor of Gothenburg, told The Local. “We hope to get the staff members taking fewer sick days and feeling better mentally and physically after they’ve worked shorter days.” This is all in the hopes that the city will end up saving money.

My feelings on this subject change w/ work load. When my projects heat up, 5 days don't seem like enough and 12 hrs is gone before you know it (because come Monday morning I'd rather not walk into a ***** storm that's been brewing over the weekend...). During periods of calm, I want nothing more than to slip out during lunch when no one is paying attention.

Either way, I get home w/ enough time to eat and watch an hour of tv before bed...aaaaaaand do it all again tomorrow.

When I work I have a sense of pride. 5 day work week is fine. Companies would have a difficult time surviving if they only got 20 hours of work out of each employee. Many 40 hour employees don't even work close to 40 hours when you factor in trips to get coffee and the smoke breaks.

Getting money for nothing would make me feel guilty and lazy. Don't get me wrong..I know part of the US success has been its great work ethic, and at times it has trumped the family. I don't agree with that as I have gone through the 60+ hour work weeks, but I also want the company to see value in the US employee, and a 20 hr work week from the OP just wont cut it.

Ok so you hate your job. Work week is M-F. You need to do what I do. Do something extremely fun every day at lunch. It makes everything so much happier. What me and my friends have been doing the past 2 weeks is call every customer service number we can. It all started when the back of a dorito bag said in huge letters questions or comments call 1-800... And every one knows that's on every thing but no one calls so that's exactly what I did. I called I said these chips are so good and stuff like that and they were just like ok. It's just a lot of fun. But we are running out of this to call so we walk around the cafeteria go up to people and ask to get the phone numbers on what every they are eating. (People will look at you weird). But today we just searched Walmart on the maps app and called a ton of local walmarts. You should really try it makes the week a lot faster.

You're not really a doctor are you?

If you live home with your parents, working less than 5 days a week is fine. Buy a house, buy a car, support a family. Good luck. Glad I'm not a kid growing up in todays world..

Im a coordinator for a real estate firm. I basically create all the video content, edit and distribute it. Same with audio. I handle all the video presentations and that includes setting up rooms, taking down rooms, etc. Theres only about maybe 20% administrative work in my position and the rest is content related.

Pretty much everyone else in my office is a licensed realtor. Even if their position is different, they have a realtor license.

I see why you don't like your job (having to work with realtors :D).

I'm assuming that their pay is mostly commission based (which would be high if they sold a lot) ?

Move to France.

Now in France, your company isn't allowed to even email you after 6:00pm.

Completely with you Misskitty. When people say 'it's because you need a new job' I understand it's not the job, it's the fact like it not, you have to be there. The only real solution is live a cheaper lifestyle that allows you to work less. Get a place with cheaper rent, cut out something. If not, the payment for your car, mobile, iPhone etc is done through doing something you don't like; work.

I agree, M-F is far too long. Your kids grow up and you don't see any of them.

Maybe move to Papua.

If you're not happy with your job then find a new job - simple.

Personally, I see an erosion with our time off. I frequently work nights and weekends and I don't get paid overtime.

Do I wish I had 3 day weekends, yeah, will it ever happen - never.

I think its time you find a job that you like and enjoy otherwise you'll be miserable for the rest of your life.

In the summers, I work from 9AM-11PM Monday-Friday, do a half day on Saturday, and pick right back up on Sunday. I don't even stop working during quick lunch and dinner breaks. During this time, I'm a photography workshop instructor. And this schedule...

...IS AWESOME!

I can't even fathom the idea of going to work, clocking out, and then going home to relax. Even in my normal professor job, I can be found in my office until 11PM-2AM a lot of nights working on photos, or if I get a free day, I'm on an airplane somewhere to give a talk, workshop, or meet with advertising clients on projects.

This thread boggles my mind.

No kids huh? Obviously, you're doing what you love and that's cool, but that schedule would never work if you're trying to raise kids.

As for the 'It's garbage', in the title of thread, sorry, time to grow up. This is the real world.

I agree with this. When I'm working on something complicated and/or interesting, I can easily spend 14 hours occupied with it, and complain there just aren't enough hours in the day to do everything I want to do afterwards. But put me on something repetitive and boring, and I'm ready to go three hours in.

And to the OP, doing a whole lot of nothing might seem like fun...until you're actually doing it. Vegging on the couch watching movies and playing videogames all day sounds like a blast, but after a couple of days, it somehow ends up becoming far more tiring and stressful than actual work.

I remember this one time, about 5-6 years ago, give or take, when I was stuck in the house for over a week due to a series of freak accidents causing my car to die from a cracked engine block. All my friends were busy with work, all my family and loved ones were out of town or heavily invested in other things. Since it wasn't a direct accident, my insurance wouldn't cover the cost of a rental, I just had to get a new car. The circumstances were perfect for me to just sit on my ass and invest in some entirely pointless, completely unproductive personal time.

And oh, I took advantage of it. That first day was great. I sat around and did nothing but watch movies and play videogames. It was WONDERFUL! Like being a kid again! The second day? It was alright. By the fifth day, I was completely lethargic, didn't feel rested when I woke up in the morning, and had a low level headache taking up permanent residence right behind my left eye. I was walking dead, exhausted in a way that was entirely different than the way you feel after a day of working. It wasn't pleasant.

Since then, I won't take extended amounts of time off doing nothing. Yeah, I'll take a day or two here and there. But if I have a week off, I'll have to occupy myself with something. Pure vegetating, as nice as it sounds when you're working, is a lot more trouble and pain than it's worth.
