That’s exactly what I saw in the reviews too—universal praise for the keyboard and yes, some did say that alone might be worth the upgrade. I had considered I may have a bad one as well and you’re right, nowhere for me to test it. I have until 4/29 to return this one so maybe things will change before then and I’ll be able to test another one. I’ve never tried a “butterfly” keyboard that everyone hated so there’s that too but I had never really considered a keyboard to be so crucial that it would make me consider a return when everything else was very well done.

I am wondering if anyone has similar concerns with their keyboard. But I received my 2020 MacBook Air (just under a month ago) and whilst the new Magic Keyboard does feel amazing and truly is a big step above the previous version. However, after less than a month of usage - I have noticed the 'matte' feeling across some of the keys (probably the most used keys) have lost its matte feel and is now becoming very smooth on those respective keys.

my issue is that whilst this is expected, I wasn't expecting for this wear and tear to come in so soon.
just wondering if anyone here has noticed the same thing with their new MBA 2020 models? just wasn't the sort of quality I was expecting from apple. perhaps, I am being too OCD?

It's really awful. But compared to the butterfly keyboards, it's a godsend.

The 2011-2014 keyboards were a joy to use. The travel on the new "magic" keyboard still needs to be doubled. Stop with this **** already Apple!

I love the butterfly keyboard on my 2018 Air--the keys are easy to press and my fingers can dance over that thing at the speed of light. Picked up a 2020 Air about a month ago and hated the keyboard so much, I refunded it. Just gonna stick with my 2018 Air and hope it never dies because its keyboard is a godsend!

Having had a 2020 air for a few months now, I'd have to say that the current magic keyboard is my favourite MacBook keyboard so far.

I've used machines from 2008-2015 and this one. I tried the butterfly keyboards and just didn't like (and this is a big reason I didn't upgrade my 2015 machine for so long.

I think Apple can do even better, but Im just happy to have a return to normalcy and it was the main and perhaps only reason I ditched my 2016 NTB (as daily driver at least, its still around for win10 booting and lots of other stuff thats on there that I simply dont feel like migrating or will have lost with 32-bit support being nipped in the bud)

The smaller footprint is nice n the Air too, though I'll admit. I was on 12" MB and non retina Airs before the NTB.

its fared pretty well for me. I can type for prolonged periods of time too without finger fatigue. Added TouchID has been great too, though TB users are used to that stuff.

I wouldn't say it sucks but it's definitely not the best keyboard that Apple has produced. I still prefer the key travel of the 2015 MacBook pros and even the earlier 2006 keyboards were much better. I guess I need the tactile longer travel as the short travel keys tire my hands/finger quickly and miss typing some letters at times. But other than that I'm glad its better than the butterfly keys.

This is my first MacBook but this is the “improved” keyboard version everyone was raving about? I can’t believe Apple would released his thing. The Pixelbook Go I tried and returned when this came out had a far better keyboard. The MacBook Air keys seem loose and make a ton of noise. I can’t even imagine how bad the last one was if this is an improvement. I even checked to make sure I didn’t accidentally receive a 2019 model but it is definitely a 2020. I don’t see anyone else complaining about this either.
Nope, not just you. I cant believe how horrible this thing is and that nobody else is complaining. The butterfly is worse, yes, but this is barely better. My 3 year old surfacebook is like typing on pillows. I pulled out my old unibody for something the other day, and I nearly wept, the keys were so buttery, and supple. Im selling this POS. nothing but trouble this thing, VERY dissapointed.

I actually upgraded to an M1 MacBook Air about a month ago and this keyboard is better. I would say perhaps the 2020 i5 MacBook Air keyboard I had was slightly defective, but I also briefly had a 2020 i3 version as well and it was the same. The keyboard on this M1 MacBook Air has keys that are less "loose" and it is better. However, it's still just a "good" keyboard. I wouldn't call it "great" by any means.

Just feels like were paying the price for a 'feature' nobody asked for in the first place.. (thin-ness) this tradeoff resulted in a dreadful keyboard, usb c ports only, so anyone wanting to use as a desktop replacement has to now schlep a 250.00 dock, and box of spaghetti cables around to be able to just barely function as such, and be plauged with thermal issues and jet-taking-off fans any time its connected to a monitor - but only for some machines. (running a 16" MBP core i9)

Oh, by the way, this was a walk in the park for my 2009 unibody, and with ports to boot. 3000 dollars+ NOT well spent. but, we got the 'touch bar'... a series of annoying submenus replacing nice dedicated keys for vol/brightness with no haptic feedback. sweet.

Apple loyalist/user since the early 80s. Still better than windows but this hardware has got to improve.

I agree the magic keyboard is very disappointing. I came from the butterfly keyboard and it barely feels much different. A tiny bit more travel but still needs more IMO.

Typing this on an iPad magic keyboard now THAT feels nice with plenty of travel!
