amateur photoshop question

I'm working on a project on photoshop for my graphic design class. All of the layers have a checkered background, can anyone tell me how to get rid of this background? thanks

Step 1. Goto Preferences
2. Transparency & Gamut
3. Grid Size = None

that should do it

the checkered background just means that its transparent.....

it wont save with the checkers....
