That thing is ****ing sketchy as hell.

It sounds and looks more like a giant fly than a dog.

If you use your imagination it sounds a bit like a cow that never stops mooing.

Or, you know, a model airplane, but that's less disturbing.

Increase the size and give it the ability to hit freeway speeds, and I'd totally take a robohorse over a motorcycle.

piffle and balderdash, it would be but the merest morsel for my

Agreed it is brilliant

I'd take it as it is now would be great to ride to uni rather than walk.

It's amazing how far they've come. I'm sure the military will find strategic uses for it, hopefully to prevent loss of life in battle.
I doubt we would ever see strategic uses of this device. However, many tactical uses come to mind such as MOUT operations.

Exactly, if it was worth a fortune they wouldn't take it somewhere icey, or let someone kick it!
Why not? That is how they test it by using difficult situations and seeing how it will respond. And if it fails, back to the drawing board.

Think of is this way. Would you want to fly on a plane that was only tested on bright sunny days?

Personally, I liked the test where it was walking down the hill in the snow and the one where it was walking over the cement blocks. In both cases you could really see the balancing working in the legs.

Imagine hearing that thing chasing you in the dark woods at night.
And imagine it doing it silently.

I was fortunate enough to do some technical illustration work of Big Dog for Boston Dynamics. It was a really interesting project to work on to say the least.

For those interested in seeing some of its inner-workings, a final cutaway illustration can be seen (and zoomed-in on) at http://www.jamesprovost.com/illustration/bigdog.php
Cool. Thanks!

Damn it, battery life!
True. Battery life will get better. With noise you at least know where it is at. Under electric power, it will just be there.

Sorry about that.

When I watched it at first, it sounded like a regular RC model airplane/car -- engine noise wise. Then later, when they were running it in the lab with it attached to an electrical source, it was very silent.

I can imagine in addition to MOUT uses, it being used for surveillance in high risk areas. Put some nice night vision devices with some optics, and you have a nice scout system. Of course the smaller would be nice.

Hope you don't have a nightmare tonight.

No worries. :) Yes, that would be quite brilliant. The possible uses are many, with a few tweaks to match the goal. With the load bearing abilities, I wonder if NASA is keeping an eye on this project.

As predicted, the "dog" robot showed up in my nightmares. Only in my nightmare, he had Stephen Hawking's head, and was laughing hysterically in that monotone, robotic voice, while chasing me on a patch of ice that he could maneuver better than I could. Fortunately, I awoke before he captured me. While I appreciate the geek factor that went into creating it, I'm half hoping the next kick demo causes it to topple over and twitch until it's "dead". Evil robot monster!
