Just checking into pricing for Apple Care for my new refurb iMac 24". At Amazon the regular Apple Care for this machine is:
"AppleCare Protection Plan MA520LL/A for iMac" and it goes for $137.24.

But there's another iMac Apple Care also listed, as follows:
    "AppleCare Protection Plan for iMac/eMac M8851LL/B - 3 Years"
This goes for $72.26 (+S/H $4.99) and is sold through Amazon by Tech for Less, which has a high satisfaction rating.

Anyone know any reason why the older, cheaper Apple Care wouldn't be a good idea? Wouldn't it still extend protection on my mac once I register? Or is there something in the serial numbers that would bump me out of range for this lower-cost Apple Care?

    Thoughts, please.

I googled around and all the threads/discussions I read said that so long as the AppleCare is for your model of Mac that it will be accepted. I would call Apple first to make sure. It would suck to discover that they would not honor the Applecare you bought.

    Confusing Applecare Part/Plan No.

I'm in the process of looking for Applecare for a recently Purchased New Model iMac 24" 2.8Ghz. On the Apple website the part/plan number for iMac applecare is MB585LL/A, however most of the ones I find else where on the net are MA520LL/A. Whats the difference between these and how can I find out whether they cover my model iMac?

    Mark.

Like I said above, I'd call Apple to make sure they will accept that part number for your Mac.

I'm trying to figure this out too. The old applecare was for the white iMac. But seems like i've read before that it would work on a new iMac as well...

I ordered Applecare on Monday. Hoping to receive it this week. I believe it's the older version, was for iMac/Emac and was only $65. I will keep you all posted and let you know if it worked for me or not. I bought the one on Amazon mentioned here. Let's hope I remember to reply back in here!

Wanted to follow up - sorry i'm about 2 days late. but it did take 2 days to register. but it went through fine! i even called to be sure i was covered. i registered online. don't know if this makes a difference, but i'd probably register online to be sure. but it works and my imac is covered - so that was worth the risk! :)

If it is called Applecare for iMac/eMac it will work period, differing part numbers aside. That and the packaging has changed over the years since the introduction of the iMac but the coverage itself has not.

Thanks all for your replies. What a great forum! My own caution, though, served me wrong: since some of you verified that the cheaper Apple Care would work just as well, I headed over to Amazon, where (duh!) they're all out of that particular item. Guess I'll have to pay larger bucks after all. But thanks for your help.

Thanks, Scuzy. Your post prompted me to go back to Amazon (yet again), and today they had the cheaper Apple Care back in stock (from Tech for Less). This time I snapped it up. Gotta love this forum.

it should work - according to the experiences and comments in this post. my imac was the batch before yours..24" 2.4 ghz..and it worked. it's worth a shot i guess. just do the registration online and hope for the best. if all else fails, you could sell it on ebay or something. good luck
