Nintendo's newest console, the Nintendo Switch 2, is going up for online pre-orders in the United States at 12 a.m. Eastern Time on April 24 at select retailers. If you plan to stay up for pre-orders, we've got all the information you need to purchase the new console shared below.

All of the usual U.S.-based retailers will have the console available for pre-order tonight, including Walmart, Target, and Best Buy. OK discounts on the Air - mostly covers the tax for most states. Weird choice to also cover Switch 2 ordering here.

Why would they limit taking orders? Wouldn't it be better to take all the orders and have an estimated delivery date (like Apple)?
Nintendo wants true fans to get the Switch 2, not scalpers. The 12 months of paid online service requirement sucks though. That’s kept me from signing up with them.

Can you elaborate on this? We have the Switch and I don't think we have any required online service plan.

Also, the 50% price increase is a bit much if you ask me. $450 for this thing and also some kind of forced online game service plan?! Plus of course all new games (I guess) so they are cooler and/or play in a higher rez.

Really want to like these but no ProMotion or front speakers kills it for me. I travel a ton and like its form factor but I use my 14” MacBook Pro for media consumption. Not everyone needs all the other BS or ability to edit something.

Nintendo’s website is only allowing people to pre-order if they’ve been subscribed to Nintendo Switch online for 12 months prior to April 2nd. This is to cut down on scalpers ordering from their own website.

The switch 2 does not have any requirement for online service.

They should produce enough so no one would bother having to buy through a scalper in the first place. I don’t quite understand their logic.

Ah, thanks. Well, certainly no rush here for our kids to get it. It looks cool but the price is quite steep compared to their previous model if you ask me.

I'm actually surprised the Switch 2 only has 1080p for its built in display and is still months away from release and will be on the market for a solid 5 years and likely more. Why not 4k? At $450 this is not a cheapo device and should be cutting edge. Heck, the iPads and iPhones have been above 1080p for a long time. 4k 50" tvs by major manufacturers can be found anywhere for easily under $500 full price. Maybe it would have sucked the battery too much.

I preordered my Switch here in Belgium through Coolblue last Friday. It’s the Mario kart one with the travel case

Can pick it up June 5

The Amazon discounts for the Macbook Air are only apply to USA. That sucks. Amazon Canada - what's up?

Regarding the Switch 2; this might be a stupid question, but how do pre-orders work in conjunction with trade-ins? Like, do you bring your old console with you when you pick up the new one, or do they need it in advance? Does this depend on the retailer?

You don't want ProMotion on an Air. Battery life, processor usage and thermals need to be kept to a minimum

I'm curious to find out if the original switch was somewhat as successful as it was because it released right before Covid and was unlike anything people have seen. It is a sweet device and I enjoyed mine, but also haven't turned in on in a few years now and have zero interest in a 2nd gen

Love that Nintendo gated preorders behind a year of Switch online. Means I might stand a chance. Good call rewarding the non-scalpers.

What happened to tariffs were the reason the pre-orders were delayed? I guess that wasn’t true. I’m shocked!

Why not 4k?
Battery drain, besides price. 1080p is higher-resolution than the Steam Deck, FWIW. Note how the iPad mini with a similar display size, but without controllers and docking station, with a somewhat higher resolution, but still far away from 4K, costs $599 with the same 256 GB of storage. While these are different devices in many ways, there is simply a certain cost to the hardware. Furthermore, look at last year’s ASUS ROG Ally X, which is also 1080p and costs $799.

4k 50" tvs by major manufacturers can be found anywhere for easily under $500 full price.
Bigger displays are cheaper to make, and TVs are a larger market, with components shared between many different models.

Pre-orders were initially scheduled for April 9. They will now be on April 24. That's a 2 week and 1 day delay because of the tariffs. Nintendo used that time to assess pricing.

While there will be no change in pricing for the Switch 2 itself, accessories for it will see a small increase. For example, the Switch 2 Dock Set will be $10 more than before, and many accessories will see a $5 increase (e.g. Switch 2 Camera; Switch 2 Pro Controller; Joy-Con 2 Pair; Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip).

They should produce enough so no one would bother having to buy through a scalper in the first place. I don’t quite understand their logic.

There's 150+ million Switch consoles in the world, which took many years to produce. It took about a full year before enough was produced that one could walk into a store and actually purchase one.

There's only so much that can be produced in the months leading up to a release. Alternatively, they could just hold off releasing it for another year until the supply stock to meet initial demand is available, but I imagine that's not a popular option for obvious reasons.
