There's no point in having 4K on a screen that size. To appreciate retina quality on a 7.9" 4K screen (558 ppi), it would need to be about 6" or further away from your eyes. No one holds their Switch that close. A 7.9" 1080p screen (279 ppi) is retina quality at 12" or further. It's the PPI and viewing distance that matter...not the resolution.I'm actually surprised the Switch 2 only has 1080p for its built in display and is still months away from release and will be on the market for a solid 5 years and likely more. Why not 4k? At $450 this is not a cheapo device and should be cutting edge.
Just barely... The iPhone 16 series is between 1170p and 1320p (460 ppi) depending on the model. The iPads are between 1488p and 1668p (ignoring the 13" models). The iPads have 264 ppi; except for the mini, which has 326 ppi. The Switch 2 has a higher PPI than the iPad Pro!Heck, the iPads and iPhones have been above 1080p for a long time.
It's much easier and cheaper to manufacture a large 50" 4K screen (88 ppi) than a small 7.9" 4K screen (558 ppi). You can't just compare the two by resolution. Again, it's the PPI that makes all the difference.4k 50" tvs by major manufacturers can be found anywhere for easily under $500 full price.
