Cue all the “they’re still too expensive” comments.
It’s the poors being poor… Just kidding of course? Apple products always sell for a premium so the day people stop commenting about the price is the day Apple will go bankrupt.

I suspect this will be the standard “sale” price on Amazon so I wouldn’t consider this as a Black Friday sale.

I don't disagree, but is it better to sell almost none of these, for $499, or sell buttloads at $299? It doesn't cost them anywhere close to $300 to make them so they'd still be turning a profit at $299.

The noise reduction feature gives these a weird pressure I can not deal with... Tested them, horrible.

We cant pretend that these things are amazing when they are absolutely unusable for some people.. Marketing can only get you so far...

If they were $300/$350 I'd snap these up in a heartbeat. Although I wouldn't use them as much as my pros I would absolutely use these on in-office days so I can actually get work done, on airplanes, and outside on my balcony (since if an AirPod falls out and through a crack in the floor it would be doomed.)

I’m sure they sell more than almost none. Sure it’s not close to iPhone sales.

That’s a big misunderstanding when it comes to manufacturing stuff. People think it only has $150 worth of parts so they should sell it for maybe $160. That’s not how things work ever. Most things you see at Walmart that are not grocery are marked up double. If you buy a phone case for $50, Walmart paid $25 for it. They’re not overcharging. That’s how much it cost to stay in business and make a profit. It cost money for R&D, marketing, fancy stores, etc.

Yes, I understand how business works and I'm not saying that's how they should price it. What I am saying is that it's better for them to make a smaller profit selling a lot of them at $300 than it is for them to make monstrous profits but selling almost none, at $549.

Many Apple products are sold for a reasonable price. Look at the new Mac Mini for instance. I consider that $600 for such a well designed and powerful product is a reasonable price.

The problem is, AirPods Max is the perfect example of a scandalously overpriced Apple product IMO.

I'm in year 4 of using mine, probably 2 hours a day on average. They still sound ****ing great. I got the battery replaced last year for like $80.

There are actually a bunch of products out there I find too expensive do I do this thing where I simply don't buy them and also don't spend time bitching about the price. But I guess whatever people have to do to keep themselves occupied!

We're not "bitching about the price" as much as saying for $549 you can get headphones that are MUCH better and for $299 you can get headphones that are simply better. For what you get, they are not a good value and the market has spoken on them.

Apple went super lazy with this AirPods Max 2024 so called upgrade (only colours and a USB-C). In fact, we now cannot even play lossless on them with any sort of adapter, which was possible with the previous model. So getting a pre-2024 version, which can now be found for much less, is actually a much better deal.

Yup almost none…

I bought my AirPods Max two years ago when Amazon had them on sale for $429 (they are now $399) and have been very pleased with them. I use my AirPods Pro 2 much more, but since I just lost those (nice Amazon has them on super sale) I will get more time with my Max while I wait for the new Pro 2s to arrive next week. :D

It might be an "old" product, but somehow I'm still so tempted. 😩

I recently caved in and got them. I usually use a pair of in ear sennheiser momentum 2…I thought those sounded pretty good. After trying the AirPods Max, new worlds opened! Not saying they are the worlds greatest, but they sure aren’t the worlds worst! My only gripe is the case thing for it is kind of stupid, other than that I really like them.

Definitely! If I needed a new mac, I'd go for the mini for sure!

1) At a lower than retail (Apple) price
So now you’re saying they’re selling almost none on the Apple website and store for regular price but at $90 off on Amazon they’re selling over 2k a month? I’m not sure if I believe that. all the people I know that have them bought them from Apple for full price. People don’t think to go on Amazon sometimes to look for a lower price.

2) Go compare them against the competition and look at their numbers.
Of course, cheaper products sell in larger volumes. I bet $99 headphones outsell $249 Sony headphones. Cheap android phones outsell iPhones by a huge margin, but you don’t see Apple lowering the price of even the base iPhone to $299.

3) Extrapolate how many more they'd sell if priced at the competitors price.
Sure if they cut the cost in half sales would increase but by how much? How much would that cut into the profit? If sales doubled but profit was cut by two thirds, that’s not a net gain for Apple. Everyone thinks about how much the components cost, but there’s more expenses than components. How much did Apple spend on R&D and advertising? If it was just putting some components together, you could release headphones and sell them as well as Apple does. It’s never as simple as people think it is.

Also lowering prices too much can hurt product and brand image. If they’re selling them for $250 many people looking for $500 headphones are not going to consider them anymore. Tim Cook hasn’t made Apple a multi trillion dollar company because he doesn’t know what he’s doing. I’m fairly certain if AirPods Max weren’t selling, they wouldn’t have updated them to USB-C. They would’ve discontinued them.

You act as if moving 2000+ APM a month on Amazon is a big deal. It's a joke. I'd love to see the return percentage on those as well. I'd bet my bottom dollar, and trust me that is a deep dive, that it's above 50%.

People who are this skilled at such enormous and profitable ventures probably don't have much time for humor.

I'm even thinking that AirPods Max will be discontinued, since Beats has over the ear, and AirPods Pro are the "iPhone" of the headphone sales. Max can't be worn with Vision Pro, can't be a hearing aid, etc.

From the stories we hear, rich people still seem to have time for humor. They just seem to think some pretty ****ed up things are funny...

I applaud your leadership in the AirPods Max Defense force, but I really think you're bending over backwards to defend something that the industry as wholly seen as a poor value.

Nobody said they're assembling random parts to make a bad product to reap massive profits.

Sigh...........I asked you to compare the sales of the APM against their COMPETITION. What is comparable in performance, but for less money.

I never said Cook "doesn't know what he's doing".

Your last sentence shows maybe a bit of lack of knowledge of Apple's past.

Sorry that Apple’s sales aren’t meeting your expectations. These aren’t meant for most people so sales are not going to be that high. I would hope profit margin is above 50%. If you know anything about business, that would be reasonable.

There’s a difference between defending a product and pointing out silly criticism.

I’m glad no one said that, but I’m not sure why you’re replying to something no one said.

I’m not sure there is any direct competitor to AirPods Max. There are cheaper headphones without some of the features of AirPods Max. Sure some people are probably buying cheaper headphones because they either can’t afford or don’t want to spend so much money. For it to be a direct competitor, it would have to be similarly priced.

I never said Cook "doesn't know what he's doing".
I never said you said that so we agree. I was pointing out that apple’s decision to price AirPods Max likely involved Tim Cook, and therefore was a well thought out decision.

Your last sentence shows maybe a bit of lack of knowledge of Apple's past.
You’re right I’m not very knowledgeable on the history of Apple.

I currently own a few successful companies. Therefore, I think I know a little about business. I couldn't care less about Apple's sales, but it is a fact that selling 2000 units a month on Amazon is unimpressive to anyone who has been successful in the business world. It's laughable, actually.

You’re right I’m not very knowledgeable on the history of Apple.

The criticism is neither silly, nor inaccurate. It is the same criticism that has existed since the introduction of the product and is the consensus opinion of the "industry" and "enthusiasts". If you love them, fine.

A "director competitor has to be similarly priced"? Say what? There are headphones made by a variety of manufacturers that have MORE features, BETTER performance, and a LOWER price than the APM. The Sony XM5's/4's are in direct competition with the APM, just as an example and if you go to sites that compare headphones by segment, the APM/XM5/XM4/B&W PX7/Bose QC45 plus a lot more are all grouped together. That's not me making that determination, that's the industry doing that.

No, it was a decision that may have been deliberated on extensively, but it wasn't "well thought out" because the product hasn't been a success and again, the consensus is they are overpriced for what they offer and overpriced compared to the competition.

We agree on your final sentence then.

Especially when Sony, just as an example, can outperform your product for $150-$200 less.
