Amazon DVD drive not working

    So I bought an AmazonBasics DVD drive for my rMBP.
    I got it today, plugged it in, and... nothing. There's a DVD in, and my computer will pop up a notification saying that there was a problem opening the drive, then the drive itself will shut off completely.

    Any advice?
    I'm trying to rip some (legal) DVDs with Handbrake for a flight I'm taking next week!

    The problem is with the Drive I think, if the USB port is working then the computer hardware is not at fault.

    I would see if another computer recognizes the DVD drive and go from there
