I think there's lot more options for automation that aren't compatible with homekit which is why I purchased a dot. Missed opportunity for apple imo. The new appletv could've been the dot

May still be yet. The bottom line is that Apple has built HomeKit in such a way that it can evolve into much more than Echo.

And with today's revelation that Amazon doesn't really feel a need to keep encryption on their devices, whoo boy!

I'm not that familiar with echo (being UK based I haven't looked too much at it as we can't get it here)
The dot though sounds like what I am looking for if it will Connect to my soundbar but will stream music from my iTunes library via voice commands. Do you still need to full echo for the dot to work? And will it do all the Alexa stuff the full version does but without the proper in built speaker?

I hope it releases in UK soon or I can find an alternative!!

The Dot will do everything the full sized Echo will do. It can either use its own (smaller) internal speaker or an external speaker. It does not need an Echo around to work. It is fully stand alone.
