So I finally bought a new iPad to replace my iPad 2 I purchased in 2012. Got the iPad Air 4. I originally purchased a MOSISO sleeve for it, but then decided I'd rather get the Zugu Alpha Case instead. It was too late to cancel the MOSISO order, so once I received both, I go onto Amazon to initiate the return for the MOSISO sleeve, and this is what I see at the end:

As you can, see I clearly selected an accurate reason ("No longer needed") and didn't claim it was damaged or anything, so why on earth would they not want it back? So strange... I guess I'll see if any of my friends needs a tablet sleeve 🤷‍♂️

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.
Probably because it would cost them just as much If not more to have you ship it back.

Yeah I’ve had a good few ‘free’ things from eBay sellers n the past, where they’ve sent the wrong item so they just send the correct one out but never as for the other one back. (I would never do this on purpose though)

I've been shopping on Amazon since 2001 and the only items they've ever said "don't send it back" were either 1. damaged items or 2. restricted items (e.g. gasoline can). This is a first for me. The sleeve weighs next to nothing and is in a plastic shipping bag, so I can't imagine the shipping cost is the reason. Couldn't cost them more than a couple bucks to ship it and of course they could always charge you for return shipping when the reason is like mine.

A few months ago I ordered 5 document frames that cost $13 each and one arrived with broken glass. Amazon made me ship it back to them before I could be refunded - and that frame was larger than this and weighed about 4x this. And there have been a few other small/cheap items like this sleeve that they required me to send back before they'd issue the refund.

Well, whatever. Doesn't make sense to me, but I'm not complaining, lol!

Hmmm, I screwed up somewhere then... I just ordered a case for my OG 12.9 iPP and the fake leatherish stuff on the spine had split/decayed/aged badly so I sent it back, when I received the second one it was actually worse, everywhere but the spine looked new. Guess they are trying to tell me to buy a new iPP? I'd love to but the Gen 1 just keeps on tickin!

Why not try a different case?

I had that happen with a cable from Amazon that cost about $8. I had ordered the wrong type, so it's useless to me, but hey, it's free!

I got the Moko folio case for my iPad and a couple of days later I found a good deal on the apple smart folio case and initiated a return after purchasing the apple case. Amazon refunded me without me returning the Moko case.

I think it's a combination of the value of the item and the number of times you have returned things. I have had a "keep it" response before and not long after I had to return a £4.50 battery!!

It’a not the cost of return shipping. But the cost of receiving in, sorting it, restocking it, etc.

Then that should have applied to the other cheap items I returned too (yet Amazon required those to be returned) 🤷‍♂️ Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

They probably do it for a subset of them. You don’t want to do it for all items under a certain weight or cost or whatever as otherwise the scummy people will abuse it for free stuff.

They likely skip it for 20% of those at random based on account status and are happy with the savings.

Amazon does not necessarily refurbish or resell returned products. I have 2 identical fridges - one with a dent in the door on delivery, which “I could dispose of - no need to send it back” as they officially informed me after I made a complain. The send me a second one and I kept the first too, because technically absolutely nothing is wrong with it, to sell it as new one would remove the dent from the door… which seems to be to expensive to do. 🤷‍♂️ (It’s not a cheap fridge, but still apparently it’s not profitable to return and repair it.

That makes more sense. Since it hasn't happened to me before in 20 years, I was just taken aback.
