If you had a base model Air, you'd throw it. I had one for work and if I had 10 Chrome tabs open, MS Teams, a couple of word docs, and maybe a spread sheet I would get warning I was out of memory and it would crawl like a snail.
MS teams can make my 64 GB MBP crawl at times. Microsoft should get rid of electron crap, it’s a disaster.

Just buy on the Apple education site. $100 off and you get a $150 gift card. Configure it any way you want. They don't verify student ID. At least in the US.
I went to the apple store in person yesterday and they actually did ask for proof of edu status (I work for a higher-ed institution). The rep mentioned that my kids would have been accepted without asking, but I had to show her my ID.

Yeah but if you order online and get it shipped, you can avoid that.

I've seen several people on MR say M4 Macs will have 12GB memory on base model, but if the new M4 iPad Pros are any indication, 8GB is here to say for a bit longer.
Interestingly tear downs have shown at least some of the 8GB M4 iPad Pros actually have 12GB based off of the chip serial numbers (2x 6GB chips mounted to the SoC). I don’t believe the system is addressing the full 12GB, so it’s still only giving users 8. Right now 6GB chips are apparently cheaper than 4GB chips so this might be a money saving move by Apple, while giving them the freedom to flip back to 2x 4GB chips if the market changes.

It could also be a sign that perhaps the base M4 will in fact move to 12GB as the new baseline. Apple’s specs have often been based on market competition, and specifically they seem to be in line with Microsoft’s Surface lineup. Before CoPilot+ the Surface line started at 8GB/256 as well with almost as absurd upgrade pricing as Apple’s. With the Surface line moving to 16GB by default that might put pressure on Apple to finally up their game as well. 12GB would be a sweet spot since it would be a much better starting point for casual users while still allowing them to rake in that sweet, sweet upgrade revenue from enthusiasts.

$1200 for 8GB RAM... Call me back when they release a 27" version at this price... Otherwise I've no interest.

I'm actually worried for the Macintosh. Apple needs the M4 ASAP and it's a bit of a puzzle as to why all of the predictions are suggesting late 2024 or even 2025 for any updates to the Mac lineup.

The WWDC keynote performance was impressive but in now looks like many of those features won't appear until 2025 and given the recent improvements in PC hardware by the likes of Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite and soon-to-be AMD and Intel chips this means that Apple is now behind in AI and at a near stalemate in multicore performance between the base M3 and relatively low-cost PC hardware.

Apple still has advantages in performance per watt but it looks like the Snapdragon X Elite's battery life is going to be good enough to offer real competition to the MacBook Air.

If we don't see new and improved Macintosh hardware before this fall then I think Apple is going to have to lower prices or at least make 12-16GB of RAM standard on their "low end" with little to no price increase over the current 8GB systems.
Yeah, how many times have we heard the “Apple is circling the drain” predictions if they don’t do this or do that? This has been going on for 40 years now and Apple is still one of only original personal computer makers still kicking. All the others are either long dead or were sold off to Chinese manufacturers.

It’s fun to read these predictions of doom, very entertaining. Any day now, any day now.

Since MR didn't bother to mention it, yes, these are all 8GB memory... for those who may be wondering/considering deal.
And since MR didn’t bother to mention it, the picture is deceptive. because it shows the iMac with no power cord coming out of the back. Many people referred to the new iMac design as an “iPad on a stand” but they are spreading misinformation. The iMac does not have a battery like iPads and MacBooks with the same chips and specs do. It needs to be plugged in to an outlet to operate.

I live in Canada, I am a student, I just purchased the Apple Pencil Pro and yes, they did not ask me to verify that I’m a student. I was very surprised.

Why do so many people here want AI on their computer? It'll just be used as a trojan spyware (see Microsoft's Recall).

I built a standing desk upstairs so I can get out of my studio in the basement sometimes when working, and I’ve been thinking about getting a second display. Would honestly buy this if I could use it as a second display along with being a family computer for my kids to train them on real computers beyond their iPads, but Apple refuses to enable target display mode anymore for some asinine reason I’m sure. So I will get some LG bullcrap and a Mac Mini.

Apple, when will next gen 32" 6K parts come out ~$500?

I want an iMac 32" 6K M4 Pro for under $3k.

Apple:RAM :: HP:ink cartridges

They're both hooked on that cheap money high.

The difference is HP doesn't have a legion of fans defending their extortionate tactics

I'm waiting for the price on new M-series iMacs to fall below the price of used i7 and i9 intel iMacs. (We're already there in the latter's case.)

Nope. the less that runs on my computer the better, cooler and lower electricity cost I have to pay.
Where the promised magical unicorns run is immaterial as long as they are promised without accountability.
