My only gripe is that I can't get native 4K/Dolby Vision/Atmos/HDR10 through the web browser for these streaming services. For that, you need the mobile apps....:p

DRM...argh.....
netflix does on safari tho, the others: not so much, sadly ;_(
also HDR 1080p on Disney+ through safari seems flakey as of right now, it more often then not defaults to 1080P SDR for me, even though all my displays are hdr. and yes, Netflix handsdown has the best web streaming video quality of any streamer, 4K HDR, but no surround or dolby atmos spatial audio sadly, which funnily enough Apple TV+ does do through safari ( tv.apple.com ) on m1 macs incl. with head tracking. though i can't verify if apple is streaming in 4K though.

I'm happy about this. As someone who prefers to compartmentalize everything I'm doing on my computer, I always prefer apps—both full native and web wrappers—to doing things in browser. It just fits my mental model of context-switching better than a bunch of tabs in a browser does, no matter how well things run on the web. I use a couple of Mac SSB creators already, and use the "Clicker for..." apps for the various video services I subscribe to. Glad to have an official app.

I would certainly prefer a fully native macOS experience, but even catalyst/iOS ports>browser for me.

I'm getting a content protection error on my M1 Mac mini running 12.0.1 - audio plays but any non-commercial video show a black screen.View attachment 1910978
That looks like a DRM handshake issue. Could be your monitor, your cable, if you have a KVM, or even the order you turned on the equipment. I’ve been getting that more often lately playing back iTunes movies I’ve bought on my Mac mini hooked up to my tv. DRM truly sucks, especially when it makes it more difficult to play movies you actually purchased than those you didn’t. It really sends the wrong message.

Cocoa apps don’t offer any benefit over iOS apps written in Swift using Catalyst.

The only reason people complain is Cocoa UI/UX is traditional OS x/macOS, while Catalyst has a more iOS-like look to it.
The UX is the benefit mostly... The Fisher-Price effect you get from Catalyst is horrible.
It is not just the visuals. It's the controls that you natively expect on the Mac but do not work, which negatively impact accessibility.

There are also a lot of components you do not get with Catalyst...
Some high-profile examples are:
- NSOutlineView: A crucial component for macOS which does not exist in iOS at all.
- NSSplitView: A full-fledged split view, used by a lot of applications for the inspector on the right side. Offers a lot more functionality compared to the split view in iOS.
-`NSTextAttachmentCell: Used for tags in a text field, a very powerful feature if applied correctly.

Catalyst is not the holy grail and never will be for a solid desktop experience. SwiftUI might be in the future, but is not right now, especially for the Mac. Make no mistake, the Mac specifically is still in a transition with its development frameworks where currently Cocoa and AppKit can still provide the best user experience. However, they are hard to develop for if you do not have the experience.

Sigh. Compatible with Big Sewer or later. That leaves me out.
I get you though... For our Mac apps we provided support for Catalina with love for quite a long time. Some components changed (in a not well-documented way) in Big Sur, so it was quite a lot of work to make that happen. We probably will drop it soon unfortunately. The world moves on and it is no longer feasible to provide that support...

Excellent! Don’t know why it is available only for Big Sur and later though.

And still can’t play content on my 21-in 2019 Mac; the video blacking out after 30 seconds due to “this device not supported for digital rights content” aka HDCP. Thanks for nothing Apple.

My goodness. How edgy and wild! I wish more people could be like you, living in the past for no good reason. So inspirational!
don't know how you dare contradict this guy with his killer "Big Sewer" slam. Who knows what he might say about you in response. Something withering I'm sure.

All displays are HDCP compliant. It's the app not checking your system properly.

It plays HDR on the App at least on iOS on my iPad Pro with the MiniLED display. I assume you can download that application onto macOS and it will be supported?
nope, disney blocked the d+ ios app on m1 macs some while ago, it did work briefly after m1 macs hit the scene, but alas, no longer. it didn't do hdr at that time and only square ipad video for viewing and no full hd

Normally so but not in this case. I can’t even play purchased HD iTunes movies from the AppleTV app or view content on Safari. If Monterey doesnt solve this (as CSR suggested) issue I’ll be pushing for a repair or outright replacement.

I have the same, and pretty sure it has to do with two monitors being attached. I deleted the app.

Wish it was so but this is with the main iMac screen, no monitors connected. The kicker is that I can play Prime content without problem with Firefox. ?

so can I with Chrome.. I could not with Safari, unless I unplugged one monitor. Prime saw it as 'illegal', so I thought that history repeated itself

Sadly, some movies that are UHD on Vudu don't show up in the "details" of movies with Prime as UHD while others do.

Ahh my bad then. Well that needs to be addressed asap then, same as the iOS Amazon app being able to only play 720p
