Amazon is taking up to $150 off multiple models of the M5 MacBook Air, focused mainly on 13-inch models this time around. These are solid second-best prices on the M5 MacBook Air in the wake of Apple's summertime price hikes.

In terms of 13-inch models, Amazon has the 16GB/1TB 13-inch MacBook Air for $1,499.00, down from $1,599.00. This one is available in two colors on Amazon, and it's accompanied by the 24GB/1TB model for $150 off.

You want to get a current model MacBook Air at close to half price. That means Apple, or the reseller, is making a loss on a product that is in demand at its normal sticker price. Why the hell would they do that?

Never say never, but the answer is already in your question.

The extra profit margin in non-base models is what allows for the discounting, as it's still selling at a profit.

I should have snagged a 1TB at $1149 a few months ago 😢. Oh well, Apple still hasn't gotten my money so I guess the price hike backfired? I would have upgraded by now, but instead I'll drive this M1 into the ground out of spite basically.

Like everyone here, it is amazing to see discounted prices that are higher than the non-discounted prices a few weeks ago. Since it is likely these machines were made before the price hike, one can assume that the margins are higher on these machines than they are now, but it would be a little over confident to assume that.

Anyway I did buy both the Neo and a base M5 MBA at pre-increase prices and seemed to have saved a lot of money accidentally since I had no idea Apple would increase by such a large amount. This is sad for all of us and for those that were still waiting or trying to decide whether one of these machine was appropriate when the price rises took effect, I am truly sympathetic. It is not your fault and it seems grossly unfair that a technology you are supposed to be able to use to improve the use of these machines (AI, LLMs) are pricing you out of buying a machine to use it. I am not sure who is going to win here, but it certainly does not seem like the ordinary consumer.

With these discount coming up pretty much daily, I doubt they are on "demand" as much as they would like to.

Case on point: The Macbook Pro M5 14 1 TB/32GB is actually on demand. It goes out of stock at Amazon at the new price and even more so at the old one. The Air is either not moving as much and they are trying to keep stock moving, or it is selling pretty poor after the price hikes. Maybe they are doing this to try to take advantage of the back to school period as well, who knows.

That being said, Apple silicon aside, these prices put Macbooks way back into non-sense territory like they were back in 2016-2020. You would have to really, really need MacOS or be a die hard Apple fan to justify paying this much.

Ram is expensive right now, but if ram goes down, so will prices of PC equipment. I doubt Apple will follow suit. They were charging 200$ for ram upgrades back when ram was the cheapest part of the PC.

I wish these deals were around closer to launch day. I know, far-fetched, but still. I wound up spending full price for the M5 Air. Not complaining, it's a great machine. I just wish I would've had more options at the time.

MacBook Airs are ind demand - there's a delay in fulfilling orders because of it.

Not so for MacBook Pros.

Even with discounts, current version MacBooks will not be sold at below cost.
