Are you serious? Because Siri is frankly pretty dumb. At least Amazon seems to be pushing ahead with their stuff. Siri is stale. When was the last time we heard about any significant improvements to it?
Um, how about during the keynote announcing iOS 10?

I'm sorry but I just don't trust these kind of products. Why would I let an always listening device into my home? So corporations can eavesdrop 24-7 and market me even further than they already do? Same with those "security" companies that set up cameras and sensors all over your house. Only with those not only can they hear but they can watch you in the privacy of your residence at all times. Might as well leave your doors unlocked and windows open so everyone can check out what you're up to, or just invite the NSA or whatever other 3-letter agencies to set up shop inside.

This day and age, nobody cares enough about their privacy anymore, and the higher-ups are taking notice and taking full advantage of the situation to exploit us in efforts to further their own ends.

These comments make me laugh because you really need to learn what is already capable by the NSA etc and then imagine everything we don't know.

This device is the least of your worries.

They will sell a bunch, just watch. I love my Apple stuff but I'm not a simple (or complex) fanboi. Alexa is so far ahead in this space, they work great, and are far more open as a home system. This box looks huge but it's only 3" deep, I can easily see uses for it in some places and they are cheap enough. If apple made it, it would be rounded and white, wow.
There are times when it is helpful to see the results of a query and this appliance will do just that. This just may be the first device I install next to my 95 year old mom.

OK, I'm late to the party, but still, that thing IS ugly. Looks like LiteBright and a generic baby monitor got together and had a kid. ...and yes, there is no way on earth any camera created by Amazon (or Google for that matter) will ever be coming into my house.

Everybody saying its ugly, if Apple made it, you would be saying, how cute, it looks like a Macintosh 128.
You would have to go back to the 90s to find an Apple product that looks like that. Apple simply wouldn't release something with a design like this, today.

Amazon is bringing back Audrey from the 90's!

For my use case I disagree I bought an echo dot and barely use it. Siri is better at controlling my philips hue lights in so many ways
I was in my master bath when I wanted to know what time it was. My iPhone and my Echo dot are right next to each other on my bedroom night stand. I said, "Hey Siri, what time is it?" no answer. I said it three times raising my voice each time to yelling and gave up. Next I said, in a normal voice as if someone was standing right by the nightstand, Alexa what time is it and she answered right away. BIG DIFFERENCE!

Gee my Hey Siri works just fine. I never have to yell either. Why do I need another device to tell me what time it is anyway?

This is my experience completely. I traded my iPhone 6 for an iPhone SE for this capability. Unless I'm in the car with Apple CarPlay or the phone is next to me on my desk, Hey Siri is useless. Plus the need for HomeKit limits its functionality with my devices, where the Echo is not as limited. We've been almost 100% satisfied with the Echo experience, although Siri non-homeconnected functionality is far superior (asking general knowledge questions).

I used to be very tied into the Apple ecosystem, but with more advancements in other companies I've strayed. I love the Alexa experience and have dots throughout my house. That being said, I don't personally have a use for this device. Seems like slight better voice recognition and a screen that I'm probably not in the target demographic for. I'm still pretty tied to Apple for phones and computers, thus the calling feature won't help. Hoping this pushes prices down on Echos and I can get some for rooms where I'd like a better speaker. Was also hoping for the rumored intercom feature. Would also like to see Sonos-like integration of the speakers for whole home audio. We're buying a very big house and those would have been really useful.

Saw the promotional video at The Loop. Very nice. The "others" are clearly integrating while Apple is going 12 directions at once, and it's all sticking to the wall, but not in a good way.

Keep those exclusive rap music deals coming, Timmy! THAT's what we want you to concentrate more on.

Oh, \s

Got two on preorder, since there's a $100 discount for a pair.

Gonna set one up for my mother. If even she can work it to make video calls, then my other four brothers will have to get one too :D

Then so will the grandkids, and then later the extended family across half the globe. Just wish it was cheaper.

Does anyone know if the video calling is specific to it? Or will they have a smartphone app as well? I have no time to research right now. Thanks!

You can do a video call from the Alexa app on your iPhone.

Very, very tempted. I would buy one of those slide things to cover the camera, but I would love the touch screen for weather and news updates in the kitchen. I wonder if it could also show recipes, etc.

Also -- is the sound better than the Echo? My Echo is very serviceable sound wise, for what it is, but better sound would probably push me to buy this.

I don't care about video calls.

Amazon seems to be going completely overboard with Echo products, the speaker was interesting, but since they added the camera and now this video box, it seems wants to track us around every corner.

Why would someone use this over an iPad with a stand and enable 'Hey Siri?' (or a competitor equivalent tablet)?

One it has great hearing compared to an iPad. Two has great sound compared to an iPad. Three one could buy four Echo Show for the price of one iPad. Four, as of today, Alexa is far superior to Siri in all aspects. Not the coolest looking device, but very functional. I would sacrifice form for function any day. Apple may offer both. Maybe a nice win.

For those who are saying people won't buy it, it's ugly, you don't want it, and Apple will come out with something better...

Apple sat on it's hands with TV and still only has AppleTV. I have an Apple, Amazon Fire TV, which is better, and a Roku, which is better than both.

Apple with home appliances is like Microsoft with business applications -- you expect more from them, but you always seem to get less.
