I'd like to get him a new M4 Air (especially at these prices) but when I ask him how his machine's doing he says it's awesome and loves it. The techie in me wants to get him a new machine but "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" is my true motto.
he’s probably been respectful when answering that question. I mean I’m 100% sure he’s not lying but he would appreciate a new MacBook for sure, especially after 4 years. Why don’t you ask him if he’d like a new one?

I think a lot of students...whether high school or college. My son's been using his M1 Macbook Air for 4+ years now and he's now in 9th grade. He's never come remotely close to using even 1/2 of it due to these points:

  1. Most importantly, all the school work is on Google docs
  2. He doesn't collect any media on his machine like MP3s, WAVs, video files, etc. which would relatively eat up 100GB pretty easily
  3. All his zillions of pix and videos are on his 512GB iPhone

Although the longer you wait, the lower the re-sell value! So there is some math to be done there!

I'm about to order the 15in Air. I'll use my current M1 Air as my media server to replace my 2012 Air which has been doing superbly for 13 years now (and hasn't had a single problem the entire time - not even a crash or lockup). Good price for the 15in base model. Hopefully my M1 lasts for another decade (especially since I'm older and might never need a new one!).
