Today we're tracking a collection of discounts on Apple's M4 MacBook Pro at Amazon, including as much as $450 off select models of the computer. All of these deals have been applied automatically on Amazon and do not require an on-page coupon in order to see the final sale price.

Deals include both 14-inch and 16-inch models, and the biggest savings will be found on the latter group. The steepest discount is on the 16-inch MacBook Pro (M4 Max 48GB RAM/1TB), available for $3,549.00, down from $3,999.00. At $450 off this is a new all-time low price on the high-end model.

For the 14-inch models, you'll find up to $350 off these computers on Amazon this week. You can get the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro (16GB RAM/512GB) for $1,399.00, down from $1,599.00, which is just a few dollars higher when compared to the all-time low price on the computer.

Discounts on current models through resellers is an enigma. Who is taking the hit? Does Apple sell to Amazon at such low prices that Amazon can make a profit knocking $450 off a product that is selling for full price at an Apple store? Surely no one is losing money on current products. It does not add up. Apple is saying on one hand their products are worth full price and on the other hand they are a discount item not worth full price.

The MSRPs are wildly inflated

No one is losing money. Apple sells the devices at much lower than MSRP to a reseller who puts it a specific price to keep it off of their shelves for too long. Apple has been running this model for years which allows items to go on sale nearly constantly.

It's a shame all these new M series Macs lose their value so fast. I used to upgrade all the time, as I could get so much back from my last computer. Think I'll keep my M1 Pro MacBook Pro for another generation at least, then maybe get an M4 Pro when the M5s are released.

Still haven’t beaten the $300 I got off the 14” 14/20/1TB M4 Pro MBP at Best Buy during Black Friday week. Guess I got very lucky with my timing.

I was able to lock in this same $1399 deal on the base M4 MBP on launch week. These retailers drop their pants real quick on Apple products these days. Almost zero reason to buy directly from Apple anymore unless you need it day 1.

Good to see Amazon has different variants available. You're not stuck with just the base RAM, etc.

Just like with the M4 MacBook Air, almost every model is a bit less over at Micro Center (price in bold). Easy price match from Best Buy if you're looking to buy.

Yep ... keeping a high-spec 16" M1 Pro Max MBP here for the same reason. Normally, I would have considered it time to upgrade, with 3 generations coming out since the model I owned. But Apple has these priced so high, I think it's reduced their overall demand to the point it's more of a niche customer-base for them. (I have a 2TB SSD in mine and 64GB of RAM, for example. That would be practically a "standard config" for a higher end Windows laptop these days, that someone might spend about $1500-1800 on. But for a 16" MBP with that in it, you're reaching the $4000 price-point on a new one. I have to take such a big hit on the resale price to part with mine in a timely manner, it doesn't recoup enough of the upgrade price for it all to make sense.)

These are great machines ... but even when you start talking about the top-end Windows gaming laptops or laptops spec'd for engineering/CAD design or animation work? There's sort of a mindset out there that you won't pay more than maybe $3500, tops -- and typically well under $3000 if you can step down to "2nd. best" on the graphics processor. These M series MBPs really only fall below those price points when you're ok with only the 14" screen size and compromises like only a 512GB or 1TB SSD, or as little as 16-24GB of RAM. Those configs don't even make sense to me when you're spending multiple thousands for a "high end" system?

Why pay new price premiums when there is no WiFi 7, yet iPhone has it? Mac sucking the hind tit. Pathetic.

Also, anything less than 2 TB is a joke when you have a 1 TB iPhone, cannot back it up to the Mac w/out external storage... Yet you cannot get all the config options through anyone but Apple directly. Ridiculous.

Well that’s likely due to economy :)

I never buy directly from Apple unless I have no other choice. They charge more and the return window is a joke. I bought my M4 Pro from Costco a month ago at these prices and stacked benefits by using my Costco Citi card.

Never seen so many discounts on Apple hardware. They must be struggling to meet their sales targets.
Also wondering if they're just dropping price points somewhat discreetly. For the iPhone for example... I bought an iPhone 13 for $300 all-in new through one of those flanker brand providers. I don't care for the latest iPhone, so it works for me. This is a price point I wasn't expecting, I was actually dreading buying a new phone for $600 at minimum... the $300 price point made me buy it sooner. If Apple did this intentionally, and not just to clear out inventory, then it's an overall lowering of the price point. On its own, I didn't expect this to be the case.

I've also noticed Costco carrying the MBA with M2 and 16GB of RAM for $699.99 - it was higher priced before the M4 Air release and ran out of inventory. Since the release, it came back in stock and at a lower price point. Is Apple taking a strategy of lowering price points in relatively "discreet" ways like this? Did they intentionally produce M2 Air laptops and use it to serve a lower price point? I think it's a great value with the 16GB of ram it now offers - the M chips are all so capable actually that any of them with the extra RAM (vs 8GB standard before) should make the laptop useful for years.

If they are lowering price points (eating into their margins), and are listening, I'd appreciate an M3 MBP with 16GB of RAM for $1,099... the M4 16GB is $1,349 at MC and just a bit too pricy for my liking. I would be happy with any M2 or newer MBP for the better cooling (for intensive applications) and additional ports built in.

Ok, then, let me open up the Lenovo page on laptops and here's what they are pushing today:

The following model was as the top of the list on their laptop page. I compare it to a roughly MBP equivalent as far as processor (though the M4 Pro really is superior for most jobs). I put a star by the specs that are not equivalent, and the arrows by things that should dissuade the belief that Apple is more expensive.

Or, Apple is selling more through retailers now than it has relied on in the past, and the retailers are cutting prices to compete with each other.

See my previous post where Lenovo is bragging about a 45% price cut on one of their laptops.

Even if it's the retailer cutting prices, how can they do that? Most likely, they have support from Apple... The question quickly becomes: What is Apple's intent here? Are they lowering prices because of weak demand (does that even affect their buyers?) or are they trying to capture more of the market by extending their selection into lower price points? I've anecdotally heard of more getting into Apple's laptops only now that prices are dropping.
